Combo feeding

This might be a silly question but how do you combo feed? Do you mix both breast milk and formula in a bottle? Or do you give breastmilk at one feeding and formula for another feed?? I’m sure there’s many other ways to do it but I guess I’m just looking for some guidance since I’m new to combo feeding. For reference.. my baby has been only taking breastmilk but she’s been struggling with bad gas lately and her pediatrician recommended offering some formula as a last resort.. I don’t want to switch to formula completely since my supply is great and I want to continue to give some breastmilk still so I’m giving combo feeding a try. Just want to know what the easiest or most convenient way to do this is.. Any tips and or advice is greatly appreciated!

I combo fed the first month with my baby…. You don’t mix anything…. You just alternate between breast milk and formula and do what works best for you and see how baby tolerates it.

You can mix them though if you want to or if your baby is struggling to take the formula 😊 just make sure you make the formula up properly with water first (ie don't use your breastmilk as the water part) and warm your milk separately in a jug of warm water 😊

Not sure formula will help with bad gas? Have you done bicycle legs?

I had to combo feed my LO as my supply was not a lot for the first 3 months. More formula so My baby had issues the first 3 months with reflux and gas. It was a big concern for me untill I put him on his tummy to sleep(2nd months onward) for naps.(but always under supervision ) I found he would pass gas better or burp if there was any that didn’t come out when burping him upright. He sleeps better on his naps when he is on his tummy or sides. I lay him on a really flat pillow so it has slight incline that helps with the reflux too. Give your baby lots of tummy time and see if it works.

Hey doula here! I’m totally not sure how formula helps with gas, but I would try probiotic drops first and do some tummy massages throughout the day. If you truly do want to try combo feeding you can most definitely mix breastmilk with formula. Just make sure you prepare the formula first to ensure measurements are correct then add some BM. many brands also offer some gas drops that have helped many families.

@Cayleigh yes we do bicycle legs and tummy massages and it helps sometimes but she still cries every time 😭

@Ariana I’ve tried both probiotic drops and gas drops but doesn’t seem to help much.. her pediatrician also prescribed her Pepcid and that seemed to help a little. Is there a specific brand you would recommend for gas and probiotic drops? I’ve been using the mommy’s bliss and haven’t noticed much difference

For probiotics I love the Gaia brand. You could also try a warm compress on her tomorrow for 5-10 minutes. When feeding you could try stopping more frequently to get more burps out. May I ask how old is your little one?

I’ll give them a try, Thanks! We do stop in between feeds to burp and also do pace feeding. I’m also going to try switching her bottles to see if it helps. She is 4 months
