From giving birth at qmc I have super positive things to say about all the midwives I dealt with during my induction/labour they were all amazing, however my experience on the ward after was pretty bad, they were understaffed and despite having an emergency c section I didn’t get much help with anything. Couldn’t have visitors cause of covid except my partner who could only come for like an hour or two so I was on my own mostly and had to walk myself to the toilet dripping blood onto the floor it was pretty horrific, I was out within 24 hours though (took the first opportunity to leave as I’d had enough) x
@Jen sorry to hear about your aftercare. We had a natural birth at QMC earlier this year under tragic circumstances and the pre care and care during delivery was great but like you the aftercare wasn’t adequate at all x
@Jen so sorry to hear about your aftercare, and thanks for sharing 🫶🏽
QMC is absolutely dog Shi*! Understaffed, no care at all. Leave you waiting for hours. Massive hospital, no staff. CITY however. Small hospital, nice and supportive staff, plenty of them too. Also great aftercare.
I’ve gone with City. Both hospitals are under review, but I’ve heard more negatives about QMC and more positives about City. So far my experience of City has been good. Although I do think staffing is an issue nationally xx
Personally I would go with city hospital there on job with everything xx I’ve been to both a preferred city xx
I would recommend qmc, we delivered our first baby there through covid! And they were amazing!! From start to finish! X
I have birthed at each hospital. QMC in 2019 and city this year. I have to say we ended up unexpectedly at city as QMC was full which made me extremely anxious as we'd never been but they were fantastic. I was induced but then had a very quick labour and they were fantastic. They were short staffed on the ward after but nothing was too much trouble if you needed help and I would 100% go there again. QMC with my first were still very good but I would say there were some communication breakdowns there which did impact me in processing what had happened during labour. The ladies delivering our baby were absolutely fantastic though.
I had an emergency c section at city In March. I can not fault them, although it was a traumatic experience the midwives e.g were amazing. Plus the care provided prior to the birth was spot on.
@Jen exactly the same as you but I was at City & had a planned c section. It’s difficult cos they all did their best but there weren’t enough people to help.
Was at city, november 2021 Er…I’d like to say was better but….not sure if was nhs procedure or what? although there were always staff if pressed button day or night er… I really don’t want to be negative but there were just so many things, it wasn’t a great experience with some of their staff in the after care for me. Some were great, don’t get me wrong wen they on shift n other times I felt like I was being judged just for asking for help?! Or simplest thing - that should of been done without me mentioning. An E.g they kept missing veg off my meals?! Or meals were inedible? So wanted to get partner to bring me food and was told he can’t - well feed me then? Another was needing help putting baby back in crib as couldn’t bend my wrist coz of rod needle they left in my arm. She’s like you pressed the button for that ? Baby nearly fell off bed is I couldn’t hold her where they left her with me? Sorry x
I have chosen QMC as it's a 7minute drive. I have attended the parenting classes at city and I do like the building and environment there, feels less like a hospital but it would take me 30 minutes to drive there on a good day with no traffic which I do not want to do when in labour, or be stuck sat in traffic etc.
I had a c section at QMC last month and the midwives and theatre team were great, I can’t really fault them. My aftercare was good too. The midwives were a little slow to respond to some of my requests but they are busy so it’s understandable I think
I gave birth at city in 2021 and had an emergency C-section. The theatre staff were amazing and on point. Care before was amazing and even the trainee midwife was wonderful! But I didnt really request anything after other than wanting to have a shower. So cannot really comment on the aftercare. But I was given medication when needed. I also was out within 24hrs after the c-section. I would say city. But go with what you want, I went with the closest hospital in case I needed to get there quick.

I think you should go with your gut lovely. People have different experiences, I heard people saying QMC was amazing and people saying it was horrible, same with Derby Hospital or City. Everyone has different opinion but I’d suggest you to book a maternity ward visit to any of them to go and see before and ask for info and then just go with what you felt you got more info about and felt that’s the one xx
@Iulia great advice thank you 😊
I was meant to have my baby at city but they were full so we had to go to qmc (September 2022) and I must say it was a nice experience (as nice as childbirth can be 🙃) - doctors in and out often, one on one care, polite staff, answered any questions. And not that this should be a decider but parking is 10000 x better at QMC. City is dreadful.
@Jen exactly the same here!!!
I had my baby at city and the experience was amazing, I ended up having emergency csection and can't thank the midwives enough as they were brilliant from start to finish
I'm due my first any day now and we decided to book at Kings Mill Hospital despite QMC being less than 10 mins from us. Everything that's been going on with the investigation, along with stories I've heard, I just felt my anxiety would be too high going there or City. Kings Mill is under a different trust and has been rated Outstanding for patient care. Every time I've been there they've been so lovely and supportive, even when I've asked to go outside of guidelines. I've heard nothing but positive stories from there as well 😊 I would advise looking into all of your options, you can choose to give birth wherever you want, it doesn't have to be the same Trust or even the same county if you'd rather go to Derby or Leicester. You can also request a home birth. Good luck on your pregnancy journey though!
@Lauren I’m so sorry to hear that, that’s really heartbreaking ❤️🩹 thanks for sharing x
@Jessie we think we’re going to book delivery for Kings Mill too. It’s 15 mins up the road for us but because we’re a high risk pregnancy we were referred to QMC for fetal care but after reading all the investigations we don’t want to risk delivery there
I had a csection previously and I just delivered via v bac at City this week. I had a very empowering birth. The midwives were extremely supportive and made my partner and I feel listened to through out. I listened to my music, I was left to get up and move around as I please, equipment was provided. The environment was so calm I went from 6 cm to 10 cm in less than a couple hours. I was allowed to labour on my own upright with just necessary encouraging prompts from the midwives. And I did it on just gas and air. Although I didn't want a csection in my first pregnancy, the operation was very calm, my baby was totally fine and my surgeon was amazing. I don't even have a scar at the site. This happened during the height of covid I'm 2020 too I can't personally speak on QMC but anyone I've spoken to about it has said their experience was OK.
@Carly I literally just gave birth yesterday and was so happy with the midwives there! They explained things they would routinely offer due to their guidelines (i.e. ctg, internals) but were also more than happy for me to go against guidelines and decline 😊 the support I was given was second to none, and although my birth didn't quite go to plan, I could not feel more empowered or supported throughout, and am sorry happy with my experience there 🥰 the aftercare on labour ward has also been incredible! Xx
Following this ☺️ we’re undecided after reading the reports
