Anatomy scan

Hi all … so recently had my anatomy ultrasound at 21 weeks, the tech stated that she was unable to get all measurements due to the position of the baby and I would need to come back in 2 weeks or so to try again. I’m just curious if anyone has ever had that happen to them… Is that “code” for there is something wrong ? i might be overthinking, but I know the techs are unable to tell you if there is anything wrong and it just spiked my anxiety 😥

Me! I’m going back next week for my re-scan. On the sheet they gave me they wrote that everything looks fine. Just have to finish the measurements x

This happened to me, they got most but couldn’t get the brain or the heart, I can’t remember which. Went back two weeks later and all was fine x

No, baby just wouldn’t cooperate. They need certain measurements and images and if baby is wiggly or asleep in a funny spot…,

I had this! Baby was too curled up & just wouldn’t get into the best position for them to get all of the measurements. We tried to think of it as a bonus to get to see him on the screen again, plus extra scan photos!

I didn't get told I have to come back, but I had mine on Thursday at 20 weeks 1 day and my little man was being stubborn and wouldn't cooperate, she had to take someone else in the middle of my scan in hopes he would change positions, he kept trying to curl into a ball and yawning the entire time.

It's really common, babies are awkward!

I had this, the only photo I got on my 20 week scan was a picture of a beautiful spine, a blurry foot and a weird blob... they also said my measurements were small and that they couldn't measure things properly or see certain organs due to the placement of baby. Went back 10 days later and all was well - however the photos didn't really improve lol

If anything was remotely wrong they would have a duty to act on it/make a referral etc. it will just be because they couldn’t get all the measurements ❤️

No, it's not a code. It happens really often and it's a good sign that your tech wants you to come back and not just ignore it and continue with the other measurements. I had it in my last pregnancy, had to come back the next week. Everything was fine. My little one is 9 months old.

No that doesn’t mean that something is wrong. It just mean exactly what the tech said. Sometimes it’s hard for them to get all the measurements they need depending how the baby is chilling in your belly. There might be times that they may need to press your belly a little to see it baby moves. But I was told that orange juice or a lollipop gets the baby moving if you wanna try that during your next appointment. In the beginning, this baby was stubborn & always covered his head. So don’t think too much into it

At mine our baby wasn’t in the right position to look at her spine. They had a bit of extra time later in the day so the asked if I minded going for a walk and coming back in the hope that baby would move so they could finish the measurements. She was fine. I don’t think it was code.

I nearly had to go back as baby was lying facing away from them the whole time but luckily at the end he turned so they could get the measurements they needed x

This is very common. They need to get so many different measurements it seems almost impossible to get them all in one scan. I had to go back for a second scan as baby had her spine to the sonographer so she could look properly at the heart. Very nearly didn’t get it on a second either.

Happened to me!

Happened to me nothing was wrong I went back second time and still couldn’t get measurements xx

No, it’s super common! Doesn’t mean anything is wrong at all.

My little one never wanted to cooperate he would seriously hide the part they need to measure so I had to come back also.

Happened to me, they couldn’t get a good enough view of his face they needed to see his lips nose and pallet which they couldn’t cause he just wouldn’t allow it, so went back they managed just about and all was well, just meant I got to see my baby again ☺️

I've been asked back for both 20 week scans with both pregnancies. It's normal if baby is in a position they can't take all the measurements x

I’m a genetic counselor and used to have the job of explaining abnormal ultrasound findings to mothers/parents. If there are concerns they have to disclose it. Although the tech can’t disclose they generally have a doctor on call to review and either need with you or discuss over the phone. Like others said- I would take it at face value. There is a laundry list of things they have to check in an anatomy scan and babies position doesn’t always make that possible. My girl buried her face at the back of my pelvis and they almost had me schedule another one but she moved last minute and they were able to get it done. On the up side you’re going to have another chance to see your little one and check in on them before they arrive!

No it's quite common happens alot!

No, it doesn’t mean anything. The baby is just not in the best position to see all sides. I did two! 🤗

My now 4 year old I had to come back because could not get her to move to get all the measurements needed. It happens babies don't always cooperate.

No, that is not a code for anything. It means exactly what they told you.

I had this done with my second, they weren’t able to see all of his heart chambers and had to reschedule due to his position. Everything was fine this happens all the time I wouldn’t give it a second thought.

Same thing happened to me. The first time my baby's head wasn't in the right position to see his face. I had another appointment yesterday and everything went well. They got what they needed.

Happened to me too! I actually had to go back twice to get everything because baby wouldn’t cooperate 😝

I just had that happen too. He was being too wiggly so they couldnt get all the pictures as clear as they wanted. Went back 3 weeks later and he cooperated better and all was good

I just had this happen. Had the same worries but the results came back fine. Baby just didn’t want to cooperate. My ultrasound tech says it happens for about 25% of babies

Sometimes they hide. My first was not camera shy my second we had to go back a couple times. She didn’t want to be seen lol
