BLW Weaning

My 5 month old has been eating baby rice since 4 months and is now snatching food from my hand when I’m eating myself 😂 Did any mamas start baby led weaning around 5 months? I’m in 2 minds whether to make a start or wait a month..

We have been doing purée and he will swallow that. We have tried him feeding himself and he puts it in his mouth and then spits it out but he has fun. Our pediatrician said at this point he is just learning about the concept of food and not getting the nutrients he needs from it our LO will be 6 months next week 🥹 we started foods 5 weeks ago and baby led 3 weeks ago.

Yeah he will demolish his baby rice, he literally forces the spoon into his mouth he can’t get enough of it lol. Yeah I suppose he will just play with it to start with!

I think it really depends on your little one and his abilities. Can he sit up unaided? Does he have good hand to mouth coordination? Does he have good head control? All of those things minimise the risk of choking

I honestly waited as long as I could before weaning, breast milk to me was liquid gold. All be it irritating, i used it for pretty much everything and even being baby-led there were times my son just seemed to need it as a comfort, aid in getting better after shots or other ailments, or sometimes I needed the comfort (I’ll admit i can be selfish sometimes too). My son even tho he started foods at 5/6 months I just continued with adding breastmilk to his diet since other types of a milk was still a bit hazardous (at least in my opinion for my son)

You're supposed to keep milk as his main source of nutrition for the first year so whatever you choose is for exploration and fun. So if he wants to grab your food it's totally okay to start BLW as there are things they can start with that young. Solid starts has great age appropriate recipes

@Giuliana he has all of these things which make me think maybe he is ready.. going to give it a go I think just as an exploration thing ! Thank you x

@Chrissy I follow solid starts! Yeah I think I’ll start as an exploration kinda thing for now and see how he goes xx

@Talon ah I breastfed for 3 months but he suffered badly with reflux and the meds from doctors made him constipated so we switched to anti reflux formula and that’s worked really well for him he now keeps all his milk down and is putting on weight properly! Congrats on your breastfeeding journey x

I started with BLW weaning around the five month mark and never did purées or baby cereal or rice. My lo was showing all the signs of readiness though, so I’d say it depends on your lo and it never hurts to ask your pediatrician. Just like many others I use solid starts and it’s been really great! 😊 My lo loved to explore her food but we only eat solids once a day for experience as their only true form of nutrition (outside of certain vitamins or iron) comes from milk in the first year.

@Lizzy my son had the same issue at first until I ended up changing my diet to something a bit more bland. It was very frustrating at first but I found ways to adapt to it. Congrats on your journey with your LO as well i know that it’s always a challenge

@Talon this comment really helped me <3 thank you so much xx

So from what I know about baby lead weaning there’s a few milestones your child should reach before you start BLW the first is that your baby be 6 months old or older. They really stress that. There’s no rush to start solids! Then can your little one sit up in the high chair with their feet solidly on the foot plate? Once those conditions are met you should be good to start
