A Failed Induction

First things first, this is my experience at New Cross Hospital. So I get in at 8pm with my partner in tow and contrary to what I believed they got me settled in (I was fortunate to get my own room!) and had a really good chat with me about what happens and when. Then they put me on a monitor for 30 minutes, followed by the first gel insertion. For me, it felt uncomfortable but definitely not painful and I have been known to be a wimp! Once the gel was put in, I was left in position for it to sit for an hour 🙃 REGRET #1: Bring an extra pillow to support your neck next time! NEXT DAY: no progress except more pronounced period style cramps. Piece of cake so far. Only drawback is being woken through the night but I'd rather that then anything bad happen! Now as I am having contractions, they won't administer anymore hormones. They will wait to see if they subside or continue. Day 3: yes, day 3. In fact as I'm writing this in hindsight, spoiler alert: the baby has in fact, not come yet and I'm facing down day 4 and the final day of induction before they move to other options. Every dose of hormones does bring on some contractions but these are basically like very strong period pains and it's easy for me to tell when they are coming as I get tightening either on my tummy, or lower abdomen first. So quite easy to ride the wave. Day 4/5: after a long day of being ignored (more to do with staff, not induction process) it has been decided that I have 2 choices: dilapan rods or c section. I've gone with c section as after 4 days, not enough has changed to suggest rods will even have an effect 🙃 And now to wait...

Sorry to hear this 😔 further convinces me that I’ve made the right option to opt straight for C section instead of induction though. Hopefully should get a date when I see my consultant today 🤞🏻 have they given you any idea on wait time for yours? Or is it a case of they’ll just take you down when ever a free slot emerges?

@Luce it's the waiting game honestly. There's a consultant strike on isn't there? Or is that tomorrow? Xx

Ahh noo… sorry to hear it’s not working out the way you hoped, but hopefully means your little one will be here soon x

@Trudie yep after the moody staff yesterday I got an absolute angel at shift change who talked me through everything. Only bother now is when 🤣

@Kirsty ohh really, sorry you had moody staff, not what you want during this time, glad you had a nice one in the end though, yea just a waiting game now x

So sorry to hear this! What a prolonged experience. Did they let you stay in hospital from the moment your induction started? I thought they sent you home x

@Farah because of the method used I had to stay in (the gel) at least that's what I'm told x

@Kirsty starts today unfortunately 😣 just realised! Our trust is saying it’s only A&E consultants striking so hopefully we will get lucky and still see ours today but I won’t hold out hope lol

It is nothing about the hospital cos inductions fail all the time. Not much more they could do and I would be happy that they haven't give you hormone drip cos they just cause pain and if baby is not ready or your body is not ready nothing apart from that pain will happen. As well if other methods failed you would be in pain without any effects of that drip for days on end with maybe emergency c section on the end cos babies on drip getting very quickly distressed

@Marta oh I know it's not the hospital. Most of the experience has been pleasant, it was just that yesterday the staff on shift were not very pleasant at all. Rest of it has been fine if not frustrating xx

Out of interest, how many outfits for you did you take with you? And what have you been wearing through the process, normal clothes or nightwear? Just trying to figure out clothes for me x

I’m on day 7, still waiting. 😪 2 rounds of hormones, not allowed home. Consultant strikes, doctor strikes, no midwives on labour ward, either have to wait for labour ward to be free to break my waters but those who’ve already broken naturally in antenatal take priority so constantly pushed back or wait until Monday for a c section but still can’t go home before then. I’m mentally and emotionally drained and I haven’t even gotten anywhere yet.

@Lucie ohh wow, bless you, I’ve just seen your from Buckingham, which hospital are you at if you don’t mind me asking, I’m from brackley

@Lucie 100% complain to PALS when this is done they need to know about these experiences. The C Section was less mentally draining than any of the induction lead up. If you need to vent my inbox is open x

@Trudie I’m at wexham!
