You don’t need to stop formula completely after 1. It’s actually advised that if baby is still on more than 1 bottle that you give 1 of cows milk and leave the rest as formula as too much cows milk can cause constipation and in extreme cases dairy induced anemia. The recommendation is 3 portions of dairy per day and 1 bottle of cows milk (4oz) is classed as a portion so you could give 8oz and then one other dairy alternative such as cheese or yoghurt etc. I’m going to try giving any milk in a sippy cup however if you want to leave the bedtime one as a bottle it’s really not that much of an issue! I’ll be waiting until 12 months to transition but I’ll be doing in gradually by replacing a couple of oz of formula with cows milk and then increasing the amount over probably a week until he’s drinking just a bottle of cows milk. Hope this helps a little! X
My son has been on normal milk for a while and health visitor said it okay, that you should know when your baby is ready to move from formula to normal milk
It confuses me too, as a FTM I'm absolutely unaware of how things work.. I'll be asking my health visitor for advice as my boy doesn't settle to sleep without milk, he has water and 3 meals a day throughout, a morning bottle, an afternoon bottle and a bedtime bottle and one through the night.. how on earth am I supposed to settle him to sleep without a bedtime bottle is beyond me😂 I already struggle as it is 😭
Back when my eldest two was babies we could transition them at 6 months and now it's one, they say do it gradually like cereals or porridge then start putting it in other foods, you don't have to do this! Asking as they're okay with formula then continue as you wish, they do formula for 1+ year although this is just a gimmick and I'll stick to what you already use xx
I was told to do it slowly when she turns one so she has formula afyer lunch, she said to offer a little cows milk in a cup and a little less formula
Thank you all so much! That was helpful. I will just follow his lead and offer him cows milk soon to try. He is being dropping the 2nd bottle of the day lately, so soon I assume we will move to 2 bottles so it's going to be easier to transition. I guess I was a bit freaked out as he is teething lately, went off from food for awhile and was preferring milk so I got scared of all the info how we should stop formula from 1 years old 😅😬
With my eldest our formula box ran out just before her first birthday so we made the switch. She’s 3 now and still has a small cup of milk morning and night, just a routine thing I guess ☺️. Will probably do the same with my second, he’s one on Wed and currently on 2 bottles of formula, one morn and one night however had also been teething lately and had the odd lunchtime one sometimes! Hope that helps! X
My first baby dropped from 4 bottles a day to 2 bottles the day she turned 1: completely her choice. I transitioned her 2 bottles to cows milk gradually just to use up the formula I had left and then she continued to drink a bottle of milk morning and night until she turned 2.5. I think you have to use your own judgement on when to stop the bottles, but as soon as we did she refused to drink milk from any cup and now doesn’t drink milk at all, I just make sure she gets calcium from elsewhere
This is baby no3 for me so all mine have transitioned before 1 This being a personal opinion Our little one has 2 bottles of milk a day am and pm plus his 3 meals He always has one before bedtime and will only take it from his normal bottle not a sippy cup Again he’s happy to have it that way They say to give cows milk after 1 however if baby doesn’t want it or dislikes it then I don’t see any harm to continue formula I’ve been winging it since baby no2 so I don’t follow guidelines as all baby’s are different, even when it comes to transitioning My little boy was on cows milk from 10 months and the health visitor was more than happy we did it early It really depends on you and your baby X
