I weaned my oldest when she was 6 months, I needed her to have a more mature gut and once you start, there's no stopping. Plus, they have a lifetime to eat... so no rush 🥰 Suggestions: - - Annabel Karmel - MJ and Hungryman I used some apps and at some point, I made my own recipes too and featured them on my IG. will go back to it at some point. DM if you have any questions xx
I really like the Joe Wicks wean in 15 book - they did a combination of purees and baby led weaning and it's got a lovely informative introduction as well as great recipes. What mummy makes is my other favourite for family meals you can all enjoy and great batch cook freezer snacks. Solid starts is a brilliant website - you can search their database to see how to safely serve different foods at different ages. Basically my weaning bible 😂 Wait til 6 months unless there's a medical reason to start early - better for their tummies, and honestly as fun as it is, you really don't want to start dealing with solid food poos and scraping Weetabix off your ceiling until you have to 🤣
Thankyou both so much! Taking all this information on board!! Will have a look at those books and also just look at making my own purée food! X
The vast majority of babies are not developmentally ready for foods until around 6 months. They need to have lost their tongue thrust reflex, be showing interest in food and be able to sit fully unsupported before they are ready for solids to be introduced. As more research is done, it is all supportive of weaning around 6 months and not earlier. Most of the time when weaning is recommended earlier (for things like reflux) it's acting as a band aid solution rather than getting to the actual problem. Highly recommend following Solid Starts on instagram, they also have a fantastic blog & app. Make sure you introduce all of the allergens and do so appropriately, avoiding them can be more detrimental than beneficial. And from a purely practical side - it's MUCH simpler when they're just having milk. Once you introduce food, there's no going back! It becomes surprisingly all consuming, so I honestly would not rush in to it at all!
Thankyou so much!
I did baby led weaning with my first. Started at 6 months. Recommend the book What Mummy Makes. My little girl loves her food.
I weaned a little bit early with my first, but that was down to severe reflux and we did it under guidance of HV, GP and dietician. We started with purees, and I'll probably do that again. I didn't use any books, I did single vegetables then combined vegetables, then fruits then meats and meals. When he was 6 months I introduced finger foods alongside the purees. The best thing I got was reusable pouches, I'd batch cook a bunch of meals, and puree/mash to the consistency we were currently on, just normal meals, Sunday dinner, cottage pie, pastina (not pureed) curry with rice ect. Breakfast would be weetabix, porridge or baby muesli with pureed fruit. If your planning on baby led from the start then you should wait until they are showing all signs of readiness, look up choking vs gagging, and ways to serve certain foods based on age ei grapes :)
