Furious with midwife - sweep refusal

I'm 40+2 and was expecting a sweep today but my midwife said no. I haven't particularly been impressed with her anyway she's dropped the ball a few times. She said no to me because she didn't want to induce me and just hope it goes natural. Surely that's my decision to make? I have a section booked in for Thursday because I do not want medical induction but was happy for a sweep and my consultant was happy with that plan. It's also a VBAC if that's relevant. I'm so angry, I was really hoping for a sweep. How am I able to get a sweep, will triage give me one?

I’m so sorry this has happened. A sweep is maternal choice so you should be given one if you’ve asked for one. I’m not sure if triage will because it isn’t an emergency but can you ask to speak to another midwife?

I would ring triage and explain to them. It’s absolutely not a midwife’s place to refuse you. I’d also contact your local PALS and tell them. I’m supposed to be allowed a sweep today but I can’t even get hold of a midwife to be booked in for one, hoping to be able to get one in the next couple of days to try get things going before I’m induced 🤞🏼😩

When I went into triage at 39 weeks with reduced movements they offered me a sweep I know its different circumstances but I would explain your situation and if they are quiet they may offer you one? Xx

Did she give you a reason for refusal? Surely you can request for a sweep and you are past 40weeks already. I had a sweep at 38weeks requested for it with my consultant who have the midwife permission to do it. I also requested for one as I hoped for vbac after 2csection and was told I won’t be induced except I labor naturally. Went into labor at 39weeks after 1 sweep

My consultant said it was fine when I asked him at 39 weeks for my midwife to give me one at the 40 week appointment. @Aseeyah she just said we don't really want to induce you, your better to go naturally.

I feel your pain 😔 I’ve just come from my midwife appointment with the expectation of having a sweep because I am 40+5 and she refused because I need to be at least 7days overdue. With my last pregnancy I had one on my due date and little girl arrived the day after. I am now booked in for Monday but I am so hoping I go naturally over the weekend 🤞 so fed up of waiting now 😪

@Kirsty that's not fair, I swear they make up these rules as they go along! There's no reason you shouldn't have had one at 40+5

I’m 41 weeks and had my second sweep today. They’re not working for me 🫣 maybe call your triage and explain, hopefully they can help you x

I had exactly the same issue. In the end, I had mine done at triage. Only 3 days before induction, and it worked 💪

I had a sweep at 39+3 but that was also after an ECV so I think they wanted to get things moving after baby was now head down But also, I’d originally said to my community midwife I’d consider a sweep at like 41+ weeks And she was shocked to leave it so late 🤣 She was like let’s do one at 40, then 41 also It’s mad how it varies and also crazy they think they can tell you what your choices should be! Your body, your rights Do complain!

Thank you all, you've validated my frustrations completely. I managed to get a sweep at triage so I'm happy with that. I just wanted the opportunity to at least try, if it doesn't work it doesnt work. I plan on complaining about my community midwife and don't want to see her again xx
