We usually use a prep machine but if you don’t have one the easiest and fastest way to do it is to boil the kettle - pour out some water and let it cool for 30 mins before using it. Then when you come to make a feed you would boil the kettle again and pour 1-2 ounces of boiling water (only 1 if less than 5/6 ounces) into a bottle - add formula and swirl to dissolve - top up with cooled boiled water from earlier to the correct ounce measure. That should be warm but not hot and able to drink straight away. Test on wrist beforehand.
The water needs to be 70 degrees or higher, to kill any bacteria in the formula. The water needs to be fresh tap water each time, so don't just reboil the same water over and over. No you can't use bottled water, because it contains something that isn't good for babies (can't remember what it is, but a quick Google will tell you)
We fill a flask that we know keeps water over 70 and do a 3oz hot shot then add formula, shake then top the rest up with cool boiled water… I did have a prep machine but checked temp of hotshot and was no where near 70 so I won’t use it at all now!
Someone above has said not to use bottled water. We don’t have a better choice unfortunately because our pipes are lead and I don’t want to risk it. I passed it by gp at the 8 week check and she did some research on it for me and said the risk of the lead pipes is higher than the risk of the sodium in the bottled water and not to worry about it.
All I do is boil the kettle and fill the flask halfway, then add cool boiled water and make sure it’s at the right temperature. The flask lasts us all day. I don’t do the hot shot or anything like it and baby is absolutely fine! There’s different ways around it but yeah the traditional way is you boil the kettle and hour before feed and let it cool then make feed then cool bottle ( this method in my opinion takes forever and is a pain in the backside especially at night, I don’t want to get up an hour earlier than baby just to stick the kettle on😂) Some people even pre-make their bottles and reheat them but unsure about that method x
