Gestational diabetes/birth

Hey mommas! First time mom-to-be here, obviously. 🙈 A couple of weeks ago I received the news that I have gestational diabetes, I have since been taking my blood sugar levels via a glucometer and trying to surveil it. I wanted to know if it’s true that gestational diabetes will eventually lead to a c-section or if any of you have had a natural birth. Thanks!

Not always. I think the main “reasons” it does is if you still have a big baby. If the baby is measuring big then they might suggest or you choose to have a c section because of it. Or if there are other emergency things but that can happen if you don’t have GD. I had undiagnosed GD with my son and ended up having a c section for lots of reasons. One of those because he was measuring big so we decided to go ahead and do it after I was in labor for a while. But good thing I did because he was 10lbs 6oz

@Gabrielle I’m glad you chose the best option for you. This is really good to know! Thank you!

I’ve had 2 natural births with GD (on insulin) for my last 2 and hoping for the same in April for my third

If your sugar gets under control with the medicine and the baby doesn’t get too big then you can have a natural birth. In my case I could never fully get the sugar under control despite a lot of effort and insulin and in the end I had a healthy baby boy with a scheduled c section at 38 weeks. He was 8Ib 3oz.

I had it and went in to labour 11 days before my due date and had a natural birth! As long as baby is measuring fine at your extra growth scans they leave you to it and can let you go to 41 weeks before intervening. We had a section booked as part of my birth plan as a last resort as they wouldn’t let me go past 41 but wasn’t needed x

I had GD and a natural birth. I was diet controlled with the GD.

My childhood friend had this but managed to have a vaginal birth, I think it’s a lot of work on your part and communicating with your medical team now that you’ll be considered high risk that you want a vaginal birth is key. Some may want to push a c-section on you if you don’t communicate your ideal birth.

I had GD and natural birth. I was induced early as she was on track to become 12lbs+ was as straight forward as my other non GD births

I had GD diet controlled and was induced at 39 weeks. I had a vaginal birth with no complications and baby was only 7lbs 4oz

Not always hun. I delivered natural with regular readings taken through out my labour.

I had GD but I got it later on around 36 weeks, I was induced over 5 days and gave birth naturally. They did push for a c section but I just said no and I’m glad I did

@Nina I have GD too 26weeks. My reading are not stable 🤦‍♀️ most times I try to skip meals but it's still not working. Sometimes sugar level can be 10/11 after food 🥲 I try to stay away from sugary stuffs

I had a natural birth. They wanted to induce me but I scheduled the induction for after my due date and baby came on time so no induction for me!

I had a natural birth with GD. My water broke on its own and baby was under 8lbs.

Thank you all for your helpful answers!! What a sigh of relief 😮‍💨

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 12 weeks. They gave me a week maybe to try and change my diet to see if my fasting numbers would do better but it didn’t work so they placed me on insulin and I was on insulin the whole pregnancy. I was induced at 38 weeks but was supposed to be at 39 weeks. I had a natural vaginal birth . Induced for 4 days and finally gave birth

@Ola oh dear, it’s really hard as I’ve been there myself, I stuck to veg, greens, protein.

I’m the same, had my check up yesterday and my specialist said that they usually induce at 38 weeks if your taking insulin, which I am, so it may be the same for you if you are insulin based.

I had GD. With my first I had an emergency c-section and with my second I had a VBAC!

I’ve had GD twice and neither was a C section. Keep your levels u der control and your baby won’t be large. My first was 8 lb 6 and second 7lb 6

@Ola Hi Ola, I had GD with my first born and it’s looking like I probably have it again with my second. I managed to control it with diet but it took a lot of work. I had to completely change my eating habits. Skipping meals will definitely not help you keep your blood sugar levels in check. You should actually be eating regularly. Try for breakfast, lunch and dinner and 2 snacks spaced throughout the day. It also really helped me to go for a 30 minute walk straight after I ate my biggest meal of the day.

I had diet-controlled GD with my first and had a straightforward induction with a natural birth. With my second, we didn’t test and just assumed I had it, went with the induction again and had an even more positive natural birth than the first! Both babies were under 3kg, so not all GD babies get big!

@Lyndsay okay thank you
