Worried about birth at Basildon hospital

I just saw a Tiktok by a girl who gave birth at Basildon hospital and she had a bad experience because the nurses and doctors were horrible to her. Obviously the below is her story but it has got me really worried because I’m hearing a lot of mixed things about the hospital. A lot of things she describes below could easily be out of context like being told “stop that” for crying before her c-section could have been said in a comforting tone. And feeling judged a lot but no reason is explained for why they felt that way. But still…I’m a bit worried Things she mentions: - recommended an epidural but given 0 info and then told off for eating - was then given an c section with almost no warning even though her midwife told her it was all fine - doctors told her to “stop that” when she cried before the c section - she wasn’t allowed out of bed and her partner wasn’t allowed to be with her - night staff played music loudly so she couldn’t sleep - she asked for help picking up her baby and the nurses just said learn to pick her up yourself and left - they asked her why she didn’t bring her own pain relief - made her and her partner feel judged when they asked for help with changing a diaper - felt judged for asking for help adjusting their car seat (tbh, this is on them in my opinion)

@Tonii Jaydee aw this is lovely to hear! When I went in for my 12 weeks scan they were actually really nice to me but others seem to have a bad experience. Maybe we’re expecting too much because of social media?

Oh my goodness - I had an emergency section here in November and honestly, I was a wreck before I went due to previous trauma from a hospital visit. They were utterly incredible, so lovely to me, made me feel so at ease and comfortable, I’d never hesitate about going back there xxx

I had my baby at Basildon last January and I couldn’t fault any of the staff. They were absolutely amazing. We got readmitted a few days after we got released and again they were great xxx

@Hannah amazing ❤️ thank you for putting my mind at ease. Glad you had a good experience

@Tonii Jaydee wow ok so she was definitely saying some things for clout. Sounds like some of the reasons for the “bad experience” were actually for a good reason

I’ve gave birth there twice now and the last one was only 5 months ago, both times I can’t complain about anything, well apart from me pushing the baby out without anyone around so she just fell onto the bed but in all fairness the midwife was looking for some gas and air tubes for me. I wouldn’t listen to anyone, everyone’s experience is different and unfortunately for that girl it wasn’t the best but that doesn’t mean yours will be

@Hana sounds like your baby was gonna come out whether anyone liked it or not 😂

@Danielle thank you for sharing!

I was at basildon hospital from last saturday to Wednesday for an induction that ended in emergency c section, and really didn’t have a good experience overall :(

Hello, so I had my little girl at Basildon and a lot of this didn’t happen with me however my little girl was in the Nicu and so I spent 99% of my time down there with her. The downsides I do have ; - During labour my body wasn’t really doing what it was supposed to, I didn’t feel any contractions even tho I was contracting and didn’t dilate. I stayed at 1cm for about 12 hours and because of this I asked for a c section as they kept telling me that there was a chance of emergency c section due to my baby’s heart rate kept dropping, they told me no and told me that would be last option but I continued to say if it is bound to happen just give it to me as I don’t want the stress of it being an emergency c section. Still refused. - Once c section had been done and I was out of theatre, i was taken to a ward full of babies and parents. This made me feel absolutely horrible knowing I wasn’t getting that first time with my baby as she was in the Nicu. Continuing on next comment -

@Renée oh hun I’m so sorry. Hope you’re recovering ok

Also if you look back through that girls videos she does have one where it says positive things from my birth experience

I had my little one there in September I was high risk so may differ as wards are different for high risk to normal. Some staff didn’t really like them most of them were absolutely fabulous! I had an induction that ended in emergency c section, you do have to remain calm and still for the needle I had a spinal but same applies for epidural. I was in there for a couple of weeks from going in waiting for induction being monitored having it and then having bubba. All staff were helpful with myself and baby (I have crutches and wheelchair), they watched baby for me while I showered offered help if I needed it, did bubbas first nappy change for me, were happy to pass baby to me ect when I asked, provided pain relief, gave me cuddles when I asked if I was upset and reassured me especially when I didn’t have my partner or parents there visiting, helped with feeding, were always happy to get a tea or coffee, watched over me when little one would only contact nap to make sure we were safe (1/2)

@Ceren I’ve been lucky and had 2 very quick births

@Amy completely agree that it comes down to experience and expectation. Thank you for sharing!

@Hana what’s it like being god’s favourite 😂 in all seriousness, glad you didn’t have a negative experience

Continued on : I wasn’t told what was happening with my baby for hours even tho I kept on asking, and eventually just went down. I did eventually get moved to my own room a day or two later so it got quite a bit easier from then on. - The last thing is they were so bad with giving me my pain medication, I would ask them and it would take them hours to bring it. I would be in absolute pain and they would say yes let me go grab it and never come back and when I’d call again and someone new would come in they’d say let me go check and never come back. I think they were very understaffed on the ward as they did always seem busy there was only one midwife who would continuously say she would get me something and never get it and when I’d go outside to say something she’d be sat scrolling on her phone or talking to someone else. The hospital isn’t a bad hospital and the majority of the staff weren’t as bad as that video is making out. They were super friendly and super attentive!

@Tonii Jaydee tbh I’m trying to keep myself educated on the baby stuff but I definitely need to research the actual birth more

(2/2) Were happy to have snuggles with bubba if I needed to go to the toilet and he was unsettle. They really did their upmost! Don’t get me wrong there will be staff that you’re like oh I just don’t vibe with them but there will be anywhere, majority are really good and care, we were touch and go both me and baby with labour and they really did take care of us, the NICU is also absolutely amazing (baby needed antibiotics and monitoring). Remember you can always ask for a second opinion and about your care or request things ect. I’d also like to mention that the anaesthetist was kind enough to print me out all information when I’d asked about pain relief in a little info pack she stapled together for me to read through which was super helpful. Xxx

I had my son(now 7years) in Basildon and couldn't fault them - my husband also said it was an amazing experience even with the slight difficulties I had. Felt listened too and staff were extremely helpful during and after birth. When I got pregnant again even tho we now live near Southend both me and husband said to go back to Basildon and so glad we did as again another amazing experience this time no difficulties thankfully just a lovely but very very fast pool birth with a student midwife.

@Ceren honestly, I had my daughter at 9.48am and my husband didn’t leave until 11pm, they weren’t pushy for him to leave. Evening staff also brilliant - I did have to ask for pain relief but also took my own and no quibbles in giving me it when I wanted it. Xx

@Jemma would you recommend a pool birth?

@Hannah i’m glad partners can stay that late. I’d feel so vulnerable without him

@Ceren visiting was until 8pm but they were totally fine, they seemed so understanding - the ward was completely full too, ram busy the day I had Elsie. I know everyone has different experiences but try to stay positive xxx

@Ceren if there is a pool available definitely - I tried with my son but as I had no drugs I struggled to push through the pain so had to get out to get help. With my daughter I was barely in their and she came out so fast. Make sure it's as hot as you like and deep as you like. With my son I didn't have it that deep as was on all fours but with my lg I was floating which was lovely 😀 Also with my son I had to wait for the pool to be available and didn't come up until I was about to push so I asked to get in a bath which was also nice , had my husband pour the hot water over my bump 🙃 luckily with my lg the pool was available straight away thank god 🙂

Had twin girls at Basildon in April and a baby in 2020. Both really good experience’s! 3 of my friends have had babies at Basildon in December and all said really good things

@Ceren both my kids were born around 3am so husband went home for a sleep when I moved to the Ward but with my son I ended up staying over night and my husband was with us u till very late as we kept the curtains closed and was quiet 🤫 😉

I had my baby in Basildon March 2023 and I can’t fault the care I received whilst in labour. My baby was born within 3 hours of me being there. I got to triage and there was meconium in my waters, I was sent to delivery asap. I had a midwife throughout my whole labour she didn’t leave my side and I was constantly monitored. There were 11 doctors and nurses present when my son was born & he was sent straight to NICU. Ultimately they saved his life.

I just had a baby delivered by c section at basildon and none of this happened to me. Complete opposite experience

@Ceren I mean with my boy (first born) I literally just made it to the hospital within 5 minutes of being there he was here, partner missed the birth because they wanted my book which he forgot as I was bleeding so he went back to get it, we only live 15 minutes away and I done that without pain relief as there was no time to give me anything. With my girl I was induced as she was measuring small and apparently didn’t put on any weight in 4 weeks and then only put on 2ozs in the last 2 weeks. I got told that I would be there a few days as the pessary wouldn’t work the first time but within 10 minutes of having it I had constant contractions wasn’t dilated at all before hand. I proved them wrong and I was there than less than 24 hours. It was very busy there don’t get me wrong but personally I thought being induced was slightly more painful hence why I was like I can’t do this again without any pain relief so asked for gas and air and I was in a room with 2 other girls

So god knows if they see anything, as the midwife was about to move me to my own room to give birth, but clearly my baby didn’t want to wait for them. They measured my girl to be 6.2 and she was 6.8 so not far off only 3 days early as I was offered an induction at 39 weeks but refused but had to go back for constant monitoring until her heart rate was over 200 on 2 different occasions, I thought ok maybe she needs to come early. But seriously your experience won’t be the same as anyone else’s so don’t listen to anyone

i gave birth rhere with my boys, can’t fault them either time. first abby they practically done evrything for me and let me sleep whole time. second baby still so good, i was so upset about leaving my first baby that one of the midwives came and see me every night to make sure i was okay (i was in 4 nights) theres going to be a bad story about evrything somewhere. i haven’t seen the video but some people like to make a problem out of nothing xx

Can only add to the good comments here. I arrived at triage at Basildon in December 2020 at 28 weeks pregnant, in a lot of pain but naively not realising I was in labour. Gave birth to my little girl 12 weeks early in the triage room, without my partner but with 3 Basildon midwives around me holding my hands. One called my partner to tell him to come in urgently, one talked me through what was happening, another took photos of my little girl for me to show me as they had to whisk her away to save her. They saved my little girl. I will forever sing their praises, and their nicu was amazing. I’m now due my 2nd baby in May and they have been amazing, so reassuring and keeping a close eye on my ask I’m now high risk. As other ladies have said, I imagine all hospitals will have patients who have a bad experience that can’t be helped but please don’t let it stress you out, it’s much more likely you’ll have a positive experience like most of us here xx

I had my girl there last week, ended up in emergency c section. My bf and I cannot sing the mid wives praises enough they were absolutely amazing the whole way through- we had 3 change over shifts while I was in labour and all of them were amazing, so friendly, super helpful, answered any questions we had and were keen to help us in any way. Even when I ended up in a c section they could tell I was terrified and one midwife didn’t leave my side and kept comforting me until my partner was in. Baby girl was born at 10.45pm but my bf didn’t actually leave the hospital until about 3am, there was 0 pressure for him to get out. Obviously once he was gone I couldn’t get out of bed but the staff were great at helping me and changing her or passing me her when she was upset. The only bad thing for me was the actual c section itself. I was in a lot of pain during it, managed to last until she came out but then they had to put me to sleep to finish x

They have been brilliant with me so far I’m high risk and have been admitted twice and the support I’ve been given is amazing!

I nearly lost my life to that antenatal group tbh all my previous was high risk and this one they thought I didn't have anemia even tho it comes and goes through all my pregnancys they made me go through pelvic dislosier constant false alarms of baby coming in the end they sweeped me before i could be induced because i was waiting for weeks slowly dilating in pain when it came to my induction day early hours in the morning i went in labour morning time by the time I got to the hospital i was 10 cm dilated and had baby there and then i was in normal ward so no high risk checks or anything despite the complaints i sent through to my midwife and the gps in that hospital complaining about all the pain and problems i had for weeks before labour in the end i nearly died because i hemorrhage which the nurses didn't seem to check first of in the end my aunty got them to check me as i was cold turning blue in the lips and was in and out of conciousness jut i was also numb down the below i was losing to much blood

But at the same time they could be better this was in 2021 mind you my last baby I have had four now my youngest is two

I have had birth an year ago at Basildon hospital. Their MAU was outstanding but the delivery suite and postantal care were nowhere the same. I second some of the last points you listed Delivery - I felt they are good at handling emergencies but pay little care to lead upto one.

I had my baby in Basildon in feb last year and it was a great experience. The staff were lovely
