Conjunctivitis??

My 11 month old has really red, puffy gunky eyes. I rang the doctors and the receptionist said they don’t treat conjunctivitis anymore, they just say bathe in warm water and it will clear up within a week. We’re on day 3 now and they’re even worse! All bloodshot, does this sound right to you? Has anyone else’s baby had this?

My daughter had conjunctivitis the other week she is 4 months old. The doctors prescribed her some eye drops and it cleared up quickly.

That looks really sore bless him! You could try getting the advice of a pharmacist? I’ve use the ones in boots before for advice at the weekend. They usually have someone in there who is qualified enough to advise. My doctor has always given eye drops when my daughter has had conjunctivitis and it’s never looked as bad as that.

@Elena yeah I thought it was strange especially with his age! I’m worried about going all weekend with it looking so bad! 😭 if the pharmacist can’t sell anything do you know if there’s anyway of getting an appointment this weekend? X

I got given eye drops for my little one and myself when we had it! They were prescribed and I can’t remember the name but you can buy them. I’d go to a pharmacy and ask which drops they recommend bc it started to clear and be soothed with 2 days xx

You’ll need chloramphenicol eye drops if it’s conjunctivitis but a dr will need to prescribe them as a pharmacist can only sell them if the child is over 2 x

Receptionist are absolutely awful at the GP lately. Ring 111 and they can give you an appointment for out of hours as that looks very sore x

My 10 month old had it last week. The doctor prescribed an ointment. His case was nowhere near as bad as your baby’s.

Receptionists really shouldn’t give medical advice! I just saw a GP for a bit of eye gunk yesterday and got antibiotic drops prescribed right away, even though GP said LO doesn’t need them now but if it goes red over the weekend (it did) he wanted me to have the drops and not wait till Monday.

It does depend on whether conjunctivitis is viral or bacterial, my GP said it was viral but then became bacterial, I don’t understand how it works but a receptionist cannot judge that without even seeing the baby.

My daughter had conjunctivitis and I was prescribed some eye drops. Try your pharmacist.

If your doctors won’t give an appointment to treat it, go to a pharmacy instead. They’ll be able to help. This definitely needs treating because of the eye being so bloodshot dx

You can get eye drops that are specifically for conjunctivitis from a pharmacy, you can always take little one to the pharmacy for a consultation with the pharmacist

Thank you everyone! I thought i did think he should’ve been given something! I’ve called 111 and they’re going to see him out of hours today x

I’d call 111 as it’s the weekend to get some eye drops/ointment; they definitely do treat conjunctivitis 🤦🏻‍♀️

Aw this looks so painful, my little boy had conjunctivitis 2 weeks ago and got some eyedrops from the dr? His wasn’t as bad as this either x

Get Clorsig drops at pharmacy tell them what there for their over counter antibiotic drops make sure you don't touch the eyes eith the tip of the applicator to stop cross infection and Zyrtec allergy drops to bring inflammation down. I hope your little one feels better soon. It's not fun for the kids or anyone really.

Yes my baby also had conjunctivitis. They gave her eye drops but gave them too late ( they refused to test her for a while ) it kept coming back so I kept pestering and eventually they gave up and gave us more drops

They do treat it but not straight away. It should usually resolve itself in a week or so but after 4/5 days they'll usually prescribe drops. Mine has had it 3 times (14 months) as he constantly wipes his nose then rubs his eyes!

I remember my son had gunky eyes ones it did clear tbh with warm water I remember phoning the doctors and sending pictures .. I’m not saying it’s right but they did tell me also they don’t like to prescribe eyedrops for baby’s if possible 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Kelly-Louise how long did it take to clear? And was the gunk green? I got drops but little one won’t let anything near his eyes, and I’m not how much if any is going in

Was probably 5 days to a week to fully heal I just used the cooled boiled water method x

@Kelly-Louise thank you, that’s reassuring. Was the discharge clear or more yellow/green? Trying to work out how careful I need to be with those drops, he cries like I’m hurting him when I go near his eyes, even just to wipe :(

@Katya When my doctor gave us the drops for my daughter she said to put it in the corner of her eye and they should go in. We did literally have to pin her down to do them but it was necessary for her to get better quicker. A hug and a chocolate coin fixed the trauma caused 😅
