Is this normal sickness?

Hey all, im nearly 15 weeks. Ive had awful morning sickness the whole way i think ive been sick daily for 3 months now, changed sickness meds with no help, tried smaller meals often and to be honest theres been a couple of days i just dont have the energy to eat. Its painful. Like at the top of my stomach between my ribs is a constant painful cramp that sets it off not just sickness diarrhea too. So far ive been up an hour and thrown up 4 times and i doesnt even feel like that sicky feelings gone. Ive had to step down at work to a point its affecting my nursery entitlement for my 3 yr old. I feel empty, in pain, and just done all food and drink I have sets me off and the headache is unbearable is this normal?

Sounds like HG Surely pregnancy related illnesses shouldnt affect your nursery entitlement?

I’m sorry you’re going through this. This sounds like HG, and can last the entire pregnancy. Treatment exists but may take a while to find the right one. Are you UK based? https://pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/get-help/treatments/

I’d suggest going to A&E and getting IV Fluids if you’re dehydrated. I had HG and diarrhea for months and developed a thiamine deficiency. If you feel very dizzy, extremely weak, have a racing heart and brain fog please mention a thiamine deficiency to your doctor. No one took me seriously for ages and they always dismissed the fact that I had diarrhea as well. Until I got so bad I started to even faint sitting up in bed. I was totally bed bound for 11 weeks. Just make sure you get meds that stop the vomiting and thiamine and IVs if necessary. Early treatment can really change the outcome. Pregnancy Sickness Support (link above) have a great helpline and can give advice on medication and they also offer peer support and counselling.

Xonvea was the best anti sickness medicine for me

@Eva I second this. It was life changing for me.

@Coadie i need to work an amount of hours to be entitled to free childcare. I wasnt able to work for 2 weeks straight so lost that entitlement

@Aggs i am yes

@Eva my mum keeps suggesting a&e but i live an hour and a half from the hospital so i dont wanna make the trip, do the hours and hours wait for them to say oh youre fine you know, i have a midwife appointment tomorrow im going to bring it all up again. I was very ill most of February with the same sickness and diarrhoea called 111, gp emergency midwife all telling me i had a gi infection, i did not and because baby is moving in the scan and all 'looks normal' they say its just morning sickness. But this feels like the same stuff as then. When i say empty i mean weak, like theres nothing left in me to give. Is HG something that can be tested?

I know this isn't entirely helpful, but I've just got to 17 weeks, I had severe nausea 24/7 since the beginning, but i reached 16 weeks, and the nausea just stopped!! The same happened to a friend of mine, she started feeling better/normal at 16 weeks!! Hopefully, you can get through this next week, and it'll just clear up!!

I wish I could say the same as others but I am about 27 weeks and have had no break from all of what was described. I’ve been all the meds you could possibly try and have been to the ER multiple times for severe dehydration and horrible back pain where I may have pulled something after vomiting every single thing for a week straight. Could only do stronger doses of zofran or some other pregnant friendly muscle relaxer and got sent home with lidocaine patches to help with the back pain. I hope it does let up for you and if you haven’t tried the Unisom and B6 combo you could give that a try, does hit hard when you first take it but eventually your body adjusts so you aren’t as sleepy. My last ER visit they noticed I was taking meds better through IV instead of pills since I started throwing up green bile from malnutrition and just having a completely empty stomach. Was prescribed suppository promethazine and it has helped quite a bit at least and have been able to keep food/liquid down.

If you can’t keep anything down for a few days and more so any liquids either they do recommend you see your doctor or ER because of dehydration, which can also make the pain worse unfortunately and cramping.

I had the same thing except it was constant. I found the morning sickness candies helped very much. The brand is Pink Stork or Preggo Pops. They work so good 🥹 eat some crackers and keep them beside your bed for when you don’t have the energy to get up for a snack but it helps a little bit bc you have to keep something on your tummy. I hope you feel better soon 🥹💗

Definitely check out and either message or call the Pregnancy Sickness Support I linked for you. They will be able to properly help you. You should also bring up HG and these resources to both your midwife and your GP. Midwives cannot prescribe you anything for it, but your GP can and should. There is no test for it, and if anyone suggests that the amount of vomiting and dehydration is a test, you need to inform them this advice is outdated. I had to advocate a lot for myself because many health professionals aren’t educated and don’t take this issue seriously. It leaves many women debilitated, and can lead to other issues. It’s heartbreaking. The charity I linked above really helped me and was imperative in me eventually receiving the right treatment. There’s also an amazing group on FB - I have linked it below. Good luck, I’m so sorry you’re going through this and I’m always available for a message. https://www.facebook.com/share/g/1AJNTQRxS2/?mibextid=wwXIfr

The RCOG and also Pregnancy Sickness Support recommend using scoring tools like the PUQE assessment (a set of questions with points) to determine severity of HG. https://pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/get-help/what-is-hyperemesis-gravidarum/ and these are the RCOG guidelines. I Found it useful to remind medical staff of those, since they should follow these but often don’t. https://obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1471-0528.17739

I totally understand your point about A&E. in fact I didn’t go to A&E but got referred to gynaecology ward by someone in the maternity assessment unit who took pity on me when I called them before they were responsible for me since my doctor was extremely unhelpful… I now wish I had gone to A&E then, because if you’re officially admitted to hospital you are in the system - since I was kind of just treated because someone was kind I was at square 1 the next time I needed help. In the end I got a great specialist once I made a complaint about my poor delayed treatment. At that point I was already out of the worst danger and was on 150mg of thiamine a day (untreated thiamine deficiency can be very dangerous for mum / baby) So much was missed, dismissed and ignored. It was insane. A lot of people have apologised now and the PALS team are still looking into why my care was so poor now… definitely speak up for your care or better still get a loved one to.

This is a great page with lots of info about Thiamine and HG. Vomiting and having diarrhea at the same time puts you at greater risk of developing this. Especially if you can’t eat a good diet either. https://www.hyperemesis.org/about-hyperemesis-gravidarum/complications/malnutrition-dehydration/b1/
