Weight gain during pregnancy…

I’m 29w 3d pregnant and nurse my 1st born 3 times a day. I have gained 52 lbs so far. When I first found out I was pregnant, I weighed 110 lbs and my BMI was 18.58. I’m 5’5”. That was the smallest I’d been since 5th grade and I really considered myself underweight, I was struggling with my weight due to stress. It’s recommended for me to gain 35-40 lbs throughout pregnancy based on my starting weight and BMI. I feel like I’ve gone crazy with food since finding out about this pregnancy knowing I’m breastfeeding, and today reality hit me. I assumed my tiredness was coming from nursing and raising a toddler while growing another baby, but maybe it’s been my weight and how quickly I’ve put it on. I don’t know how I could hold back on food for the next 2-3 months until I deliver. I feel great about how I look, but I can’t tell if my struggle to put clothes on/ stand for 20+ minutes is because of this weight or just being in the 3rd trimester. I eat fairly healthy but my hunger doesn’t stop. I’m grateful to finally have an appetite but maybe I’m lacking self control at this point. I meet with a different provider for each OB appointment and none of them have mentioned my weight gain, but I fear it’s just because they haven’t paid attention to my beginning state or they don’t bother looking into it since 162 lbs is usually seen as healthy/ average to them. Is it bad that I fear gaining more weight? Has anyone else started pregnancy underweight and then gained an excessive amount of weight while still nursing? I honestly feel so alone, and the only advice I can find online about being healthy involves weight loss. The thought of maintaining or losing weight is foreign to me since I had been wanting to gain for so long while feeding my 2 year old.

You really should be bringing it up if you’re concerned. But you’re in the third trimester, and chances are you’ll slow down! When you say you went crazy on food, really assess what that means. Typically in pregnancy you eat more throughout the day and less scheduled meals, at least in my experience, and I have to remind myself of that when it feels like I’ve just been eating all day! Being pregnant with a toddler is no easy feat and I’m right there with you, exhausted half the time! If you’re concerned health wise, try walking and staying hydrated. Sometimes it can be a circulatory issue and the walking will help

@Keilah I walk daily and I’m definitely well hydrated. My body is definitely bigger but not swollen at all, like my ankles and hands are still as thin as they’ve always been. I don’t snack much or eat throughout the day. I really just eat 2 big meals with a snack in between, and dessert to hold me off until morning all at about the same times each day. I gained exactly 10 lbs this past month and exactly 10 lbs the month before. I feel like I’m healthy but fear that my idea of health is distorted because of my past struggles with food. And I feel guilty for allowing myself to obsess over the growth thinking that I could never gain “too much.” It’s such a mind game. I wasn’t concerned until today but will definitely bring it up at my next appointment in 2 weeks.

First pregnancy/ I gained 5kg up to month 7. So really nothing, but now in month 8 I put another 5-6kg and have still 6 weeks to go. At this pace I might end up putting in total 15kg or so and I really don’t want to! I am hungry yes byt I eat moderately I think… it feels like I put weight just by breathing. 😮‍💨 I am scared that my baby could get super big and difficult to birth or that I will be in trouble to lose weight after pregnancy if I keep gaining this much. :(

Take a deep breath 💙It’s all going to be ok. I am your same height and I ended up being 162lbs in my third trimester. I also felt like I was starving through out my pregnancy and didn’t have any self control with food. I did eat as healthy like you. I don’t think you’re over weight. Just keep eating healthy foods now and after giving birth. The weight for me went down to 150lbs when breastfeeding then dropped to 126lbs when I stopped. I think this is all normal and I wouldn’t stress about it. You got this! Sounds like you have a lot on your plate! hope this was helpful.

I gained 60 lbs, I was 110 before preg and 18 months after I was back to 110. I wouldn't worry about it as long as you eat healthy foods and make sure your nutrition is good I think some people just gain more weight than others

@Lily Did you fail the glucose test at all? I just found out I failed the 1 hr test and have the 3 hr test scheduled for Monday morning. My OB said this much weight gain and gestational diabetes commonly go hand in hand, which is now my biggest worry.

@Tay Everyones "healthy" weight gain in pregnancy is different, with my first 2 children I lost over 15kg while pregnant, every body reacts differently and as long as youre eating a healthy, balanced diet and doing your usual activities you shouldnt worry. The pain & struggling is likely from being heavily pregnant, you can ask for physio if needed they can help and give you excercises that should help Gestational diabetes is caused by hormones released by the placenta and not anything you did/didnt do while pregnant. If you do have GD it isnt from your weight gain, however GD can cause more amniotic fluid and bigger baby which could be contributing. Either way try not to stress about it xx

@Tay no I didn't have GD! I passed my 1 hour, but I know people that failed the one hour and passed the 3 hour so good luck!
