Farm question (lambing)

Can any farmers out there help me out . We've recently moved to a farm and my husband is helping with the lambing . I know I'm not meant to be near the sheep when they give birth but how strict is this because it's just us incharge of the sheep and I'm feeling like its going to be so hard staying away completely. Everyone seems to tell me different advice and some farmers say it's an over exaggeration I just don't know what to believe and how strict I need to be . I know I definitely won't be lambing any myself but can I still be in the shed as long as I'm really careful and wash hands etc thoroughly afterwards ?

My in laws have always said to me that as long as you don’t touch anything/ practice good hand hygiene especially when preparing food then it should be okay but I don’t know if it’s best to stay away completely or not x

Yes you can be in the shed just wash your hands well. Particularly avoid any stillborn lambs and their mothers.

Hi I live on a farm and also have a part time job on one. You are best to just avoid touching any animal that is new born or their mother's the reason for it is because you can catch toxoplasmosis which is harmful to you and your baby if caught and can cause miscarriage. The main thing is to wash your hands after touching any animal or pen especially any that have newborns in

Also remember to avoid touching the clothes your husband has been wearing while helping with lambing to be on the safe side it's probably best he washes his own farm clothes to avoid you catching anything off them

Thanks everyone

Hey I’m a farm animal vet and am 19 weeks pregnant. You should not touch any newborn lamb until it is at least 2 weeks old. Do not assist with any ewes lambing and do not touch any birth materials or discharge. You should not touch your husband’s dirty overalls, he needs to wash these himself and leave them outside away from you. Always practice high standard hygiene and wear protective clothing if you need to go into the lambing shed. As already said it is the abortion viruses ewes carry which if you catch can cause you to miscarry.

Thank you that's very helpful
