Strep throat

Has anyone experienced recurrent strep with their littles? My son has had strep 5 or 6 times since last February, 3 times in 3 months. His pediatrician said he doesn't see it beneficial to remove his tonsils just due to recurrent strep because it just takes away that barrier that helps prevent other sicknesses. Since his last strep, mid February, his tonsils have been somewhat enlarged but doesn't typically snore unless he has sinus congestion. His doctor said he wouldn't consider removing them unless he snores a lot and his tonsils are enlarged and obstructive. Any suggestions to help prevent it occurring so much other than hand washing? And yes he's in daycare.
