Birthday plans

So my birthday is coming up end of June! My friends and I booked to go Portugal for a few days! Unfortunately my friend’s dad passed away. Given the circumstances, I know she will not be coming, neither will my other friend. Is it shady if I go alone? Or do I postpone the whole thing and attempt to get a refund. I now have no plans for my birthday. I don’t know what to do. Advice pls.

This is a tricky one... completely understand why you're unsure. You don't want to be insensitive to your friend who's just lost her dad, but at the same time it's your birthday and you might not get your money back if you cancel. Personally I think I'd see if I could get my money back first and if so, rearrange the trip for another time. If I couldn't, then I'd be tempted to go. However, travelling alone is not great. I've travelled alone for work a lot and it's never great sitting by yourself at a restaurant, especially on your birthday. But if you don't mind this and the intention is to just chill, relax and recharge, or if you're just one of those really social people that makes friends wherever you go, then go for it! X
