Experiences with MKUH

Hello, I'm just curious about personal experiences with care at Milton Keynes University Hospital — especially around prenatal, birth, and postpartum. We're planning to move to the area but are debating whether to move before or after our second baby is born. I'm currently under a wonderful hospital in London (had a really positive experience with my first), so I'm a bit nervous about the change. Would love to hear your thoughts!

I had a high risk pregnancy and they were great with me. I also ended up getting gallstones & pancreatitis whilst pregnant and they were fantastic. Had an emergency c-section and they talked me through and helped me understand what was going on. My only issue was that on one of the nights I was in (we stayed two nights), some of the night staff weren’t as helpful as the day staff, but I’ve found that in all 4 hospitals I’ve stayed overnight in xx

Prenatal I saw a different midwife everytime but I was just unlucky with my midwife being off sick then moving practice etc. that’s not standard. The labour ward staff were wonderful. The ward afterwards was horrible though for me but I also know I’m a terrible patient as I’m a nurse myself so I expected more from the staff. The HCA’s were great but most of the midwife’s were ‘lacking’ for want of a better word. Post natal was fine nothing much to report it was as expected. Personally I’d move after the birth if it was from my own experience but I know others will have had better experiences than me, I may have just been unlucky with a complicated labour and induction process

I had my first at Mk and i thought it was pretty good . I had great prenatal care , my midwife during my labour and birth was fantastic . After birth they were really helpful with breastfeeding and bringing me pain killers . I think i got very lucky and gave birth at a time that wasn’t very busy . but one of my friends had the complete oposite experience to me . I’m having my second there again (due in june) and so far the antenatal care has been great but i am definitely nervous for my birth after hearing my friends experience. She was induced and left for days without being seen and then a midwife broke her waters by accident which led her to get an infection . She was discharged from hospital the day after she gave birth but was back 2 days later cause her baby had sepsis which the doctors didn’t pick up before letting her go .

I had my first at Kingston. My second pregnancy was in MK. I saw the same midwife for all my appointments which was nice as this wasn't the case with Kingston. Not gonna lie I had a pretty awful consultant appointment and that was my first time ever filing a complaint (literally in my life). That specific person was not informed about what I was diagnosed with and was trying to read off of google and just giving quite a bit of misinformation (confusing low lying placenta with placenta previa which are super different). She was very condescending to us and got quite sassy when we very calmly showed her that my husband and I have done so much research. If I had listened to her I would've ended up having a c-section at 36 weeks but I actually had a perfect homebirth at 40+6. Other than that specific person, everyone I met was super great, supportive, knows their stuff, and has a smile on their face. Whatever you choose to do, make sure you are informed and advocate for yourself! Happy to answer further questions

I had both my kids at MKUH and had good experiences each time, but I was lucky that I had two straightforward births and pregnancies. During my second pregnancy I saw a different midwife each time which was slightly annoying. My second baby was also breech and they offered me an appointment to turn baby which I took. They messed my first appointment up and we ended up having to go home after hours of waiting. We were furious then but they made sure my next appointment went smoothly and they managed to turn the baby which meant I ended up having a very quick and straightforward vaginal birth in the end. Both times labour staff and midwifes were incredible. Very knowledgeable and helpful. I never had to go to the postpartum ward as I was discharged after 12 hours after each birth. The first time around (Nov 21) I had covid so they kept me in a private room the whole time and second time I gave birth in the night and they discharged me in the morning so again we were in the same room the whole time.

Meh, the labour team were absolutely lovely and helpful, but whilst I was waiting to be induced the nurses were pretty rude and just didn't want to be there. I also got told I was being a wimp when I was asking them to stop doing cervic checks as it hurt to much and then got told the nurse didn't want to come and break my waters as she didn't think I could handle it! And then afterwards on ward 9 again they didn't care very much and I only saw a nurse twice in the 12 hours we were there and ended up discharging ourselves
