Maintaining blood pressure after birth

I developed high blood pressure towards the end of pregnancy. About a week or so before having my daughter. Hospital ended up putting me on Nifedipine to take 3 times a day. It was still fluctuating after labour so they wanted me to include another med called enalapril to take once a day which seemed to help because my levels came down pretty well with it. I'm not a fan of taking meds, especially not for a long period of time. Wondering if any of you have been in a similar position with BP issues during/after baby and if you managed to reduce or come off them over time? I'm looking forward to getting my pre pregnancy life back on track, better nutrition and exercising đź«

I don’t have answers but I’m the same and have been out on meds post birth for my blood pressure, they did say they don’t want me on them forever so hoping they work and then will have GP reviews where hopefully they will reduce dosage/take me off them soon

I developed high BP about 2 weeks PP, came out of nowhere and they are not sure why that happened so we’re hoping to be a Postpartum thing that would go away after around 6 weeks. This also happened to my cousin and she’s now back to normal. I take amlodipine once a day, however my doctor recommended me to stop taking it for a day and monitor my BP to see if I’m back to normal of if I need a lower dosage as I feel pretty drowsy most of the times, especially when I’m trying to wake up. I hope this helps :)

@Rachel that's what has been explained to me after being discharged yesterday, that it will be followed up via the GP now and they'll review it. I'm hoping once I get myself back on my feet it will slowly sort itself out. When did you develop the high blood pressure issues?

I’ve been on medication since 16 weeks pregnant. It was the highest the first few days postpartum and I was on labetalol and nifedipine. After a week it started to lower a bit and after two weeks my GP has started to reduce my medication. I was in a similar situation with my first pregnancy and was off all medication by around 6 weeks postpartum.

@Stephanie this sounds promising. Thank you for replying. im hoping this is the case for me. Was you ever told what could have been the potential cause of it? Up until now the med team don't have an understanding as to why it happens in pregnancy

@Miriam thank you for replying. It does seem to be a mystery doesn't it. I'm too, hoping that it will resolve itself soon. I'm 2 days PP so early days for me and it's only come about the last 1-2 weeks. Hopefully it all resolves itself for you soon 🤞🏻

@Iona for most people it does settle. My BP is the high end of normal anyway which is hereditary for me but I’ve also had issues in the past with the pill making it go up so it’s definitely linked to hormones. It does mean you’re more likely to have issues with it when it comes the menopause.

My blood pressure seems to have spiked at the end of my pregnancy resulting in emergency c section (this happened a few days after it was measured by consultant and found to be fine) and it stayed high after. I am on nifedipine, 20mg twice a day but have just now been told I can reduce to 10mg twice a day. I am 7 weeks pp

@Claire oh I'm so glad you've been able to reduce it. This must be a common thing going on in pregnancy, but in all four of my children this is the first I've had it and never heard of it since this
