C section consultation

I’ve had my c section consultation today and feel SO confused from it.. I went in asking for a C-section and 90% sure it’s what I wanted spoken to people who’ve had them researched it etc To come away with no clear answers and left more unanswered than when I went in. I expressed all my points, reasons why I want one etc And was just told all the cons of having one and how many complications can be.. and just all pros of natural and how I should really consider natural And to end the app by being advised to have a real think about it, and will be re contacted in 3 weeks to see if I still want a c section or chosen natural route…? I’m 35 weeks now and that will make me 38 weeks when I am reviewed.. Has anyone else had this ?

That’s a pretty similar timeline to when I lived in North Yorkshire, you’d get a date give between 38 and 39 weeks for your 39th week. Sometimes they’d literally contact you the day before and schedule you. When do you next see your midwife? Just discuss with her that it’s definitely what you’d still like if that’s how you feel and then when the next appointment comes round express the same and they should give you your date. It’s definitely frustrating when you feel strongly one way but I think they just have to be really upfront about the associated risks because not everyone does as much research as you have. Sorry that you didn’t get many answers but remember even if you spontaneously go into labour early you can still let them know you were electing a c section and they should get you on the theatre schedule x

If this is your first baby then unfortunately despite everything they will definitely still push a natural delivery on you even when your in labour because of associated risks etc but there’s risks with every type of delivery so as long as you’ve decided what you think will be best for you and baby, you make sure even up until the last second you vouch for the delivery you want! The time frame is extremely normal as they will normally be done within 39-40 weeks so they’ll usually let you know a week prior or sometimes less as they can’t guarantee anything even on the day of your elective but my friend was recently given the week they’ll book rather than a specific day on her final consultation at around 35 weeks and didn’t know officially until a day or so before x

Sorry you didn’t get much clarity. I didn’t have this experience, I actually had my consultant push for c-section and I’ve had to really advocate for myself to have a natural birth. I would see it as a positive thing. Hospitals especially in the UK get more funding for carrying out c-sections so if there’s push back, I’d take that as the consultant really being diligent and having your best interest at heart rather than ulterior motives. You can still always opt for a c-section at your next consultation, it’s always your choice😊

I feel like the doctors don’t listen at all. I just been to one today aswell. My plan is to have a VBAC as with my first I had a emergency C-section and today I told her what I wanted all she could tell me about risks and how my baby is big etc. bare in mind I have had 2 glucose tests and I’m not diabetic or anything and she keeps insisting I should take a glucose kit and should consider elective section or they can induce me etc.. I’m just going with my body can take right now because they don’t even support your decision!! I came out so confused because those growth scan aren’t accurate either. My first they said he was big and he came out at normal size at 3.2kgs

I can understand being frustrated at the lack of a date when you've made clear this is what you want, but they do have to give you all the evidence before preforming a surgery that may not be medically necessary. Obviously I don't know your reasons, but if they're pushing you towards a vaginal birth I would assume they don't see a medical reason for the surgery, and it is major surgery with at least a 6 week recovery period, and carries far more risks than not having surgery. Furthermore, it can also affect how you give birth in the future. That being said, NICE guidelines state that it is up to a woman how she gives birth and they should be respecting that. With my last section I was given a date about a week before, so it is quite normal to not have a date until just before the surgery itself.

Thanks all 🥰 We will see what happens from here.. Yeah no medical reasons for having one or wanting one just personal choice. Think I just went in expecting them to hear me out and accept it, didn’t anticipate any push back

@Steph I am electing a section and consultant was amazing with me if I can help in any way send me a wee messsge x

They don’t book you in until much later so don’t panic. I was told last birth I couldn’t give birth naturally and at my 2nd consultant appointment yesterday she said I still have a choice as baby is measuring very small and I don’t need to make a firm decision until my next appointment (36 weeks) when they will book me in for pre-op. X
