My boy is 7 weeks old tomorrow, has anyone’s babe been out on gaviscon? How did you find it and them?

We have just been prescribed it today for our 8 week old LB, will let you know how we get on. I have just given him his first lot and he appears more settled 🤞🏼

I'm thinking of booking a drs appointment for my little boy

@Ann-Marie that’s great! I’m hoping it’ll stop his screaming and unsettledness and he’ll be back to a happy baby, it’s aweful isn’t it!🥲 will be doing our first one in the next hour 🤞🏽

@ED93 what symptoms is he having? Maybe could offer advice or clarity?

It's worked wonders for my son, we ran out and had to wait a few days to get more and the difference was huge

@Emma thank you!

@Amy they've suspected reflux since week 1 but they didn't want to start him on anything due to the potential side effects, he's very unsettled after a feed, arches back, being sick a lot even an hour + post feed despite being kept upright

@ED93 I would personally make an appointment, if you suspect it, it’s usually the case as we know our babies better than anyone. My LB had these symptoms and I changed him to anti reflux formula and it helped decrease the severity of it. Mines a long story as suspected CMPA too but I’d make the appointment. I’m not going to use the gaviscon unless absolute necessary as he’s settled with just the formula, slightly uncomfortable but doesn’t appear to be painful currently

We got prescribed it for little girl at 3 weeks but for silent reflux. Only do half a sachet per bottle and it helped loads with the acid coming up and being swallowed back down. I was worried about constipation but even though it’s changed the consistency of her poos, she still going regularly. Although we have been prescribed aptamil pepti 1 for potential CMPA today as we have a few other symptoms still

@Lauren yes, we were put on aptamil pepti 1 on Friday but it made him 10x worse so had to refer back to anti reflux cow and gate as the dr said there isn’t any point in trying to persevere with it causing him so much discomfort. I don’t want to keep changing his milk all the time as that won’t be helping so just trying this again and hoping for improvement which seems positive at the moment despite the CMPA symptoms

@Amy in what way did it make him worse? Did you find he accepted the milk? I’ve heard some babies will refuse it x

@Lauren he was inconsolable, would just scream in pain during bottle, after bottle, being put down and being comforted he would only sleep due to exhaustion from screaming all the time. He didn’t like the first bottle, he got better with the second, by the third he was eating but in pain and after that he was okay with the taste and eating it but was overall really unhappy with it. You just have to persevere, they’ll get used to it if not then add sugar free vanilla flavouring drops that you can buy off Amazon. I didn’t bother as I didn’t see the point in trying to mask the taste to then have to try and eventually get them used to it unless necessary just do it first as last x

@Amy do you know why it would make him in pain? My baby will basically fight the bottle at feeds now with normal aptamil asif it’s causing her pain but I don’t know whether it’s her acid reflux while she drinks or she associates the bottle with the after pains of feeding so sort of has anxiety of the bottle. I’m so worried about giving the new milk to my baby but I also know I have to wait a little while to see if it even works & she could still fight it for a little while

@Lauren if I’m honest it’s probably either 1. the fall out from when he had bronchiolitis last week or 2. because of the fact that the proteins are already broken down or 3. because it’s a new formula which is reacting to his digestive system. I never really gave it chance but I didn’t want to take any chances either as I’d never experienced anything like the pain that he was in but I’m going to lean towards 1&3 as his stools started to turn green which isn’t always a good thing as some people say it’s the iron but it can also be that baby’s gut disagrees with it too. He’s now currently just back on anti reflux cow and gate and is considerably more happier and settled. Just have to keep and eye on his rash and if it gets worse then I have to try the Pepti again and if it doesn’t work then change to another CMPA formula but unless his reaction is severe in the mean time I’m not bothered about the CMPA as their introduced to diary again later on anyways and it’s only an allergy.

@Lauren it can take up to 6 weeks sometimes 8 weeks for people to see improvement in babe after switching formula but you know your baby better than anyone else and when the time comes to switching just be vigilant. I would give it 2 weeks personally if she’s doing ok with it when you start

@Amy my baby seems uncomfortable some of the time but also sleeps pretty well at night and sometimes can take a feed well (if she’s sleep usually) so I’m conflicted on what the problem actually is. I get that, if my baby would take a decent amount of milk per 24 hours I’d probs just leave the other symptoms but it’s really affecting how much she drinks so I’m worried about her weight so need to at least try this milk I suppose x

@Lauren it probably is more than likely CMPA and that she just struggles to potentially break down the proteins in the normal formula where as I’m sure you’re already aware with Pepti, it’s already done for her. It still has dairy in the formula so it’s not essentially removed. She may have a complete dairy intolerance and have CMA but yes it’s trial and error unfortunately and can sometimes do more harm than good but 🤞🏽 for you both and it works, there’s nothing worse in there seeing them struggle x
