SMA Althera

Doctor suspects my little one has CMPA and has prescribed this SMA. Waiting to pick it up but wanting to know anyone else’s experience with this milk? I know all babies are different but I’ve never heard of it and just want to know what kinda things to maybe look out for to show it working / not working. Baby is madly uncomfortable on his current formula (HIPP organic) as didn’t know he what CMPA, they said it was ‘normal’ or ‘just reflux’ before today, so I’m really hoping it’ll help My baby is 6 weeks old

Heya my little one is on this and at the start he didn’t like the taste but now he gets on with it

My baby had a bad reaction (eczema flare and blood in poo) - but she already had confirmed CMPA, so was half expecting it, as Althera still contains Lactose/dairy. Moved to Neocate

Get a decent bottle brush as it leaves a greasy residue- rinse out asap and it's not too bad. Hope it works for your little one

We used this and didn’t have any issues, like Vic said the residue was the main thing but not the worst thing in the world 🙂

My little girl was on this and it made her feel worse so we had to get it changed to SMA Alfamino which is completely cows milk free x

Looks very odd in consistency/colour and leaves a greasy residue on the bottles! My little boy improved after being on it 2 weeks but felt his symptoms could improve even further. We’re on puramino (completely milk free - similar to neocate and alfamino) now and he’s doing much better!!

Same as the comments above- defo need to wash it properly with a brush. Our GP recommended to slowly introduce altera in each feed by adding 30ml more. We totes forgot about it and gave him altera and he didn’t mind it tbh. We went back to standard formula as CMPA hasn’t been confirmed in our case. He had dark green poo before during and after so nothing had changed.

It is the most palatable out of them all! It’s the only one my daughter would drink (she refused nutramigen and pepti entirely) lots of her symptoms resolved but not completely so we ended up having to move to alfamino. You might have to introduce it slowly mixed with regular formula and it can take up to 6 weeks for symptoms to resolve although for most the severe symptoms ease quickly. It is very thin though so you might need a thickener

@Reema what symptoms did she show to tell you she was getting worse? X

@Lauryn how long did she stay on it before you changed? X

@Becky how soon after you started using it did this happen? X

Within 1-2 days, these are symptoms she’s experienced when she’s had dairy before x

@Naomi she was on it for about 5 weeks. She was still pooping 5-6 times a day very wet with mucus so they agreed it wasn’t the right formula for her

@Naomi initially she was on Nutramigen and we saw a change in her behaviour so she was no longer arching her back and crying before and after feeds. This only lasted a few weeks before she went back to how she was before. Then she was on Althera and she was screaming while feeding, crying all day not just at feeds and was soo unsettled. Then once on Afamino she was like a new baby. No longer crying, no more diarrhoea, her eczema cleared up and she’s been on this since October x
