Formula on the go for newborn

How do you make bottles (with formula powder) when out and about? Trying to figure out what I need and what is best and safest way. Finding it confusing when looking online 🙈

I take formula pots, premeasure my Scoops for each bottle into them, a nuby rapid cool and a thermos flask of hot water. I use the hot shot method with the rapid cool so it doesn’t need to be washed and sterilised whilst out and about x

Here's what I did yesterday: I filled the bottle with the amount of water I wanted I put the formula powder in another container I filled my coffee thermos with boiling water When I needed a bottle I mixed the formula and heated it in my coffee thermos

We bought some formula pots (Tommee tippee do some good ones but ours are just Amazon) We fill a jug everyday with boiling water and allow it to cool down so we take as many bottles out with us as we need and we fill one with the cooled down water. Then we take a flask of hot water with us. So we can make the bottles at the right temperature for baby to drink straight away!

We’ve used the Nuby rapid cool set for both of our kids 😊

Yeah I had a formula dispenser as well that was easiest

Formula pot with 4 sections in for 4 lots of pre measured formula. Got it on eBay. Thermos flask with boiling water and Nuby rapidcool. I use hot shot method so no need to steralise the rapidcool inbetween but you can purchase a portable rapidcool staraliser if you wanted to use it to cool the formula after making. You must always make sure the water you mix formula powder with is above 70 degrees to kill any germs and stop baby being poorly. Never make formula with water that has been left to cool. Incase you are unaware, with the hot shot method you pre measure the amount of hot water needed for a feed into babies bottle, then pour some of the hot water out of the bottle and into the rapidcool to cool. The remaining hot water in the bottle is what you mix the formula into to kill the germs and then top it back up with the cool water out of the rapidcool. This way the formula is the right temperature for baby to drink and made safely to avoid tummy bugs.

How much ML of cool water would you add to the hot water for hotshot e.g. 6 ounces

I use ml as it’s easier for me to work out. For a 180 ml (roughly 6oz, as it’s the same number of scoops advised on the tin for either) feed I leave 90ml in the bottle to mix the formula. For a 150ml bottle I left 60ml, and 120ml feed I left 30ml. Works out to leaving roughly 1/3 hot water 2/3 poured into the rapidcool.Needs to be thicker than a paste to ensure the powder dissolves and kills the bacteria

@Emily I was told to leave 1/3 of the feed worth of boiling water in the bottle and the rest in the rapid cool x

So roughly half and half? Kill bacteria first with hot water then add half cool water? I always wondered why this was never suggested by midwife’s. I was coooling bottles under the tap at first at 12am 3am 6am with a crying baby at first. Now use rapid cool for really unsociable hours but probs easier just to add the cold water

@Emily yes exactly that. And I don’t believe they’re a fan of hot shot methods because of ensuring the formula is fully dissolved and germs killed. Which is why I add a little more hot water than the exact 1/3 split suggested just to be on the safe side. I was initially making all bottles fresh, but couldn’t cool them fast enough. Then I tried ready made formula for night feeds but was giving her tummy ache. I was dubious of the hotshot method, I had a rapidcool for a while before I eventually decided to try it. My friend kept nagging me to try and I’m glad I did. It’s so much easier. I have a thermos flask too as I found the flask that came with the rapidcool didn’t keep the water hot all night. With the thermos I fill it at 8pm and the water is still above 70 degrees at 8am. I take the flask, rapidcool, and pre measured formula to bed each night same way i would if going out for the day. So so much easier!!

@Danielle I was doing the same! I nearly bought the prep machine tbh! I agree about the hot flask doesn’t stay hot for that long. I actually bought a kettle where you can boil it and then set the temperature to 70degrees (or any degrees) so it’s quicker to cool down and the kettle keeps it that temperature for 24 hours.

@Emily whoever invented the rapidcool need a medal lol! It’s the best thing ever!Omg that kettle sounds amazing. Please link it I feel like I definitely need that in my life lol!

I either make a bottle If I know I’ll be using it within 2 hours or just take ready made formula. It’s so much easier and doesn’t take up as much space in the changing bag. Can be expensive though depending how much you’re using it xxx
