Feeding

Hi all Hope everyone is coping with motherhood. My little boy is 6 weeks on Monday and we are having a few issues feeding. I was breast feeding him for the first month with no issues then a growth spurt hit and I wasn’t producing enough for him so we moved on to bottles as well. Now he is thriving on the formula milk and it has also taken pressure off me to be his main carer and my partner can get involved. My issue is that a 5oz bottle isn’t filling him any more he is always wanting more. My sister (her kids are now 11 & 9) has said to make up 7oz bottles and let him eat what he wants but I am concerned about over feeding. He will eat 7oz without throwing up but seems to be uncomfortable through the day and night and dosent like laying on his back to sleep. My mum has said to go old school and introduce water to him with 5oz bottle feed and to use the water if he is still hungry after the 5oz. I’m just confused as NHS insist no water to babies under 6 months. Is anyone else having this issue? Any advice or tips will be greatly received Thanks

Could you possibly ask your health visitor?

I have left several message with the team but no one seems to get back to me. :-( x

Are there any health visitor drop in clinics near you that you can visit? Similarly any breast feeding ones? You’ll find midwives there that should be able to advise. Potentially you could change the teet on the bottles you’re using to make baby feed a little slower on the formula. If formula feeding is easier, he may be feeding less and less from the breast because it’s more effort, so might genuinely need more formula to fill him up. A slower teet might help? I’m by no means an expert though, and actually haven’t fed my baby any formula (we’re EBF) but a possible bottle preference is something I have had concerns about when it comes to getting my husband involved in feeding!

Have you tried responsive feeding with the bottle? That might make him slow down and realise he’s more full than he thinks he is? Random question how did you figure out you weren’t producing enough for him breast wise?

Hey! Congrats he is gorgeous. I bottled fed my first and had some comments around overfeeding but honestly if he he still hungry after 5 I would def increase it - not sure if you’ve heard of pace feeding but that really helped me first time round. I’m combi feeding my second and it’s insane how much he is going through (I feel the same as you that I’ve hit a point where I’m maybe not producing quite enough). I’d def steer clear of water for now if I were you as he is so little. They will struggle a bit with formula to start with as their tummies get used to it - it’s a very obvious difference for me after a bottle when he’s trying to pass wind etc bless him. Good luck! X

Hi all Thanks for coming back to me. So I have tried responsive feeding and on this he would take 7 oz bottles not be sick, winded well and then be uncomfortable in his stomach and not settle, but he wouldn’t call for more food. I have done the last two bottles at 5oz and used a dummy to pacify him even though he is initially asking for more food. I feel awful him asking and me not giving but I need to work out why his tummy is cramping so much. I am on tomey tippee stage 1 teats so not aware of any that are smaller? When he was EBF he would feed then get very frustrated come off the boob go to the other and do the same again and still call for food. He was doing this nearly every hour so I assumed I wasn’t producing enough for him?

Could it be trapped wind? I would do a 6 so it’s in the middle? But try the running leg man to help get the air out a bit, or hold him on his side until he falls a sleep and then put him on his back? I used to put a blanket, rolled up under his feet when he was on his back which helped him sleep better! In terms with the water. If he’s is formula It has to be boiled cool water and only 2oz if it’s hot weather and if he’s constipated. But only if you feel like doing it or comfortable. But it could be a growth spur as well. I would speak to someone, maybe your doctors for advice as well
