PPD/PPA

Has anyone on here struggled with PPD or PPA and got help through the GP? If so what was the process like. I have an appointment today and I’m scared they won’t take me seriously

I was told to self refer to a talking service and so I referred myself and I had an initial appointment 4 weeks later and I will start counselling 8 weeks after the initial appointment which isn’t great but I was fast tracked because I’ve just had a baby. Normally the wait time 18 months! My GP didn’t want to put me straight on tablets and see how much I get from the counselling but tbh I’m thinking of going back and asking for some medication as I need help now I feel and waiting is too much

I was refered from the GP to the perinatal mental health team, they’ve been amazing. X

I was referred to the perinatal mental health team too. I was also prescribed SSRIs. To be honest I didn’t find the perinatal mental health woman very helpful but I think that’s just me and unique to the issues I was experiencing. However once the SSRIs kicked in I started feeling much better. I know people are apprehensive to take them but they really do help x

Thanks ladies, it was a long appointment but I’m glad I went! @Rosie if you don’t mind me asking, how did you find the SSRI’s when you first started taking them and how long did they take to kick in? I’ve just been prescribed some and so anxious (ironically) to take them!

The only problem I had was that I struggled sleeping for a few days which was quite annoying. I think that’s quite common. You can take half a pill for a week to get your body used to them though and then start taking the full one, so I would reccommend doing that maybe? X

I found they started to work fairly quickly, I felt a bit better after about a week (not sure if that was placebo effect or not!). After about a month I felt much better. Feel free to message me if you have any more questions or want to chat. PND/PNA is so hard x

@Rosie yeah I’ve heard this! My baby apparently doesn’t like to sleep at night anyway so why not🤣

@Rosie thank you so much!
