When did you start buying things for the baby?

I have my 20 week scan today and I’m feeling anxious. So far truthfully I’ve bought nothing for the baby because I’m worried something will go wrong but I assume at some point I’ll need to get over that! So have you started buying things yet? When did/will you start? And, to add a little lightheartedness, what have you been buying?

If you feel more confident waiting for your 20 week scan I would. But then I would start to buy things slowly, especially if this is your first, to spread the cost out. Make a list of bigger things to buy a few mo than before like side cot, car seat, pram. But all other bits I would start to gather it all adds up. Steriliser, clothes, bottles, nappies, nipple cream, baby bath seat, car mirror muslins, bibs, blankets. Enjoy it!! X

Hi Melissa! Amazing name by the way ☺️ I’m in the same boat, my 20 week scan was last week & yesterday was the first time I bought anything! & it was only a little jumpsuit hat & cardigan from Asda. I haven’t really had a reason not to buy things I just was waiting for a reason I don’t know 😂 I must admit once you buy the first thing, you will then feel better & buy more & more. I still haven’t got the big things yet, pram/cot etc but there’s lots of time yet so don’t worry! Go at your own pace & when you see something you like you will buy it ❤️ there’s no rules & no pressure so take it slow & do what feels right for you x

I have been buying clothes since 12 weeks but waited until the 20 week scan to buy crib, push chair etc…

I’ve got a payment plan set up with a huge bundle of everything I want with my local baby store, and I pay that monthly. Ive also got some clothing. Ive had so many losses (all before 12 weeks) so I didn’t go crazy however its getting closer and closer and financially i need to prepare now x

@Kayleigh ooh I’ve not seen anything like that!

If you go to Tommys in Peckham. They can create a bundle for you and do a payment plan to pay things off monthly. We began to buy for our first after the 20 week scan. But there is no wrong or right time to start.

I started buying colour neutral clothing from primark and a few soft toys just after 12 weeks, then brought the Car Seat, a play mat and baby carrier at 18 weeks as it was on a deal, Plus I was told the risks are low after 12 weeks I was still pretty nervous as it is my first child though. When I had my 20 Week scan and was told baby is doing really well and development is normal that put my mind at ease, I've now brought my Stroller (again it's currently on a deal) so I thought why not, couple of books for early reading, a Pram clip toy and Pram books and a few bits for myself, breast pumps/nipple cream and you're must haves. Ive also brought a few things off Shein. I think i have enough clothing till my baby is at least 9months and a few toys I now just need a newborn travel cot & firm mattress and sterilizer set.

Just a note for buying big things early - if you can pay now but wait to pick up, you can maximize your warranty time! That's my goal for things like pram and car seat, so that the warranty clock isn't ticking while they are just sitting in the nursery waiting to be used

I was exactly the same as you, and having gone through ivf plus 6 years ttc I’ve been so worried about buying stuff too early. But I started buying as soon as I could feel baby move daily as that’s been my reassurance that things are fine so from around 20 weeks onwards. We already know the gender so I’ve bought a few clothes sets while there’s been a few baby events on, I’ve started the nursery and have a rocking chair, ordered the pram bundle and car seat, and I know which cot and chest of drawers I want so will order that in the next week or so. I wanna get the bulky stuff done before third trimester while I have the energy and then focus on the last trimester to just learn and do antenatal classes and buy toiletries etc then and do a big Costco trip at that point! That’s the plan anyway x

I've brought loads of clothes! Booked John Lewis baby day for next Thursday to buy new pram! Have pretty much everything else from first baby. Bit old fashioned but I'll keep my pram at my mum and dads till 35 weeks. With my daughter I did the the same (23 weeks now) xxx

@Sophie-Jayne I’ve not heard of keeping the pram elsewhere, is that a tradition?

I waited until I’d had my 20 week scan and now I know everything is looking ok I’ve ordered a double buggy (I have a 2 year old too) and a car seat. I’ve also bought one sleepsuit and some hooded towels but that’s it! I still have things that I kept for my daughter so I’ll reuse the Moses basket, next to me etc and just buy new mattresses nearer the time. It’s good to make a list of all the big items you need and then start buying those. I think a car seat is priority as you literally can’t leave the hospital without one!

I felt completely the same, I bought my pram super early at around 11 weeks because it was in the sale LOL. Other than that I bought nothing until this week after my 20 week scan, I think finding out the gender makes baby feel more ‘real’. I don’t think you ever stop worrying but try give yourself moments to be excited about xx

I realized reading the comments that I might be too excited 😂 I am 24 weeks and I bought basically everything already and started to put the nursery together.

@Melissa just superstitious I suppose! My mum did it with me as the baby before her she brought her pram brought it back and then lost my sister at 28 weeks so I've just followed on! She literally lives 10mins from us, so can grab it when needed anyway! Won't actually need it when he is born right away x

I bought one or two neutral clothes early on. We had to have extra scans and an amino because of a slightly raised NT value( baby was being awkward on the first scan) so me and my partner didn’t want to buy anything until we got the amnio results and 17 and 20 week scans done. All was fine and started making the bigger purchases since then, mostly due to being a teacher have to wait until we break up in July to have travel system nursery furniture delivered.

Start buying now. It’s highly unlikely to have a miscarriage once you reach the 20th week. I am also 20 weeks, buying sale items. Baby items is so expensive, so myself and my partner agreed to buy items month by month, before I go off for maternity and income significantly reduces. Good luck with the scan. Mine took 50 mins. I wanted to wet myself. They check every organ in babies body.

Thanks all. It’s been really helpful to get a range of perspectives. Also, the scan went well - and it’s a girl! ♥️

@Melissa congratulations Surely you can’t resist buying some cute girl clothes now

With my first I started after 20 week scan xx
