Pooing after C-section

Probably a bit too much info but I don’t know where else to ask Had my little one by emergency C-section in Feb, I lost a lot of blood so had to be on iron tablets for four weeks after. They warned me these tablets can make your poo hard and black and gave me a stool softener to ease it. I’m now 11 weeks post partum and am still really struggling with pooing, when I do manage to go it’s so painful and it makes me bleed badly. Has anyone else experienced similar or can anyone recommend anything? I don’t want to waste a doctors appointment for it hurting when I poo 😂

Have you tried lactulose? Don't feel like you are wasting the doctors time though!!

How much water do you drink?

I have to take iron tablets too have emergency C- section

I had a c-section and was on iron tablets too - I’d recommend Laxido and stay hydrated! Few other things I found were using a step/stool to get your legs up and if you make a fist with your hands and rub them up and down the front of your legs when you go it’s almost like it releases some tension. Works for me but it doesn’t mean it will work for everyone but worth a shot x

Hey it might be a fissure if you’re getting blood - there is cream a GP can give you if you aren’t BF, if you are then I recommend lactulose or movicol xxx

I had a vaginal birth but lost a lot of blood so had to go on iron tablets. My body just hasn’t gone back to normal since!

Same here !

I sent my husband out to by laxido over the counter and I took it for a week! I also took peppermint capsules from h&b daily to help.

I had a vagina birth in Feb but suffered from piles and I now currently have a fissure that will not go 😔 it’s fully taking a toll on me as well, as I the days I do go the toilet I’m in agony for about 9 hours after! Highly recommend going the doctors , they will assess what the cause is and give you laxido or recommend possible procedures ! You can also buy laxido over the counter, the doctors recommended I try 3 sachets a day to start with , you’re definitely not alone x

I had a c-section and i didn’t need iron tablets. However, the pain relief made me constipated. I finally used a glycirin suppository as advised by the maternity helpline. That helped, but i have not started to poop normally and i’m nearly 13 weeks PP. It is so painful and hard that i squirm when i go! 😩 i’m assuming its my diet, not drinking enough and the long road to recovery… I did try lactulose, but the GP said it wouldnt overly help and i cant take much more as i’m breastfeeding 😩 the things mums go through!

i had EMCS too - i am 12w 4d PP and still struggle! i was sent home with a bottle of lactulose and bottle of peppermint water, finished BOTH in the first few weeks and still not able to go pain free!!! even to this day, i go maybe once every 3 days and it genuinely can make me cry in pain and bleed 😶 apparently if your bowels are moved during CS, it can take a while for them to find their “way back” and cause disruptions for a while… i was told to call doctors back at 16 weeks if issues persist for further softeners x

@Olivia exactly this! It hurts so much I want to cry sometimes. And I’m going so infrequently I’ve got stomachache! I never thought about it having all been moved about during a c-section that does make sense. I’ll keep trying lactulose for a few weeks and see if it’s not resolved by 16 weeks

God I love this app, nothing is too strange to ask! thank you for all the replies ladies I don’t feel as weird about it, I’ll try some of the suggestions lactulose/movicol etc and see how I am in a few weeks and if not resolved I’ll go to the doctors x

strange to admit, but i actually find it easier to rock back and forth while on the loo to help manoeuvre it out🤣🤣 i also try to go after a warm shower or something (maybe try a bath if you’re cleared to do so, i can’t as my wound was open until last week so not allowed to submerge it yet) in hopes it softens🤣 i think one time i was so desperate i ate 7 weetabix🤣🤣🤣 all i got was bloated and a funky smelling stomach 🤣 hopefully this helps🤣 good luck pooping! 🤭 x

@Lauren I found movicol much better than lactulose and it’s still BF friendly x

I was on the same, although they never warned me about the constipation/black poo until i started asking dr’s and midwives what the hell was going on! I was told 2 litres of water per day, lots of fibre, and grounded flax seed! I think midwife suggested 1-2 tablespoons of flax seed in porridge or a drink etc, unfortunately i couldn’t get hold of any anywhere, but she said its great to help get fibre in your diet. I also had lactulose every other day. And my iron tablets every other day (advised by midwife as i was in so much pain when taking them daily). Soon as i came off them it eased x
