Sciatica pain

Hi, has anyone got any tips for dealing with sciatic pain? I’m 25 weeks and have had it for almost my full pregnancy so I’ve learned to just deal with it but the pain is starting to get unbearable to the point I can hardly move. I work in childcare so I’ve got a very active job which probably doesn’t help but my leg was swollen at the weekend and I had to lie in bed or on the sofa for a fair bit of the day which I don’t like doing because it’s a waste of the day. So yeah question is any tips or advice to help it.

Stretching and massage with a tennis ball in the glut/hip area has helped me. I haven't got the back pain (typical of sciatica), but piriformis syndrome mimics all the same symptoms. Hot water bottle and ice rotation. Hope that helps!

Ask your midwife about magnesium supplements or sprays. Each trust is different, and personally, mine aren't happy for me to use anything, so I haven't been. But I've heard of plenty that are. I've had sciatica for the last 10+ years and find that its muscle/nerve relaxing properties can really help

I am suffering from sciatic nerve pain too, so I did with my first pregnancy. My midwife referred me to the physio but while they call me, I am seeing an osteopath privately and it's helping a lot. He also gave me some stretches to do at home and go for short walks throughout the day. Good luck

Your midwife can get you a physio referral. Mine was bad before due to sports but now even worse I’m having it every other day

I got a doughnut cushion which helps and I wear the pregnancy belt to support my back I find sitting down long periods makes it worse

I get it on one side but more so on both now as I try and sleep on my left notice it acts up there now

I’m the exact same as you! I work in childcare and currently 28 weeks. I got referred to physio and they gave me some great exercises! I find my gym ball helps so much, sitting on that and doing hip rotations and figure of 8’s. One of the best exercises has been - Go into a crawling position on all 4’s. Cross your ‘sore’ side leg over the other. Lean down into the sore side stretching it all out. Hold for a few moments then lean back up. Going from this, spread legs out to make room for bump and pull yourself down into child’s pose. It’s helped me loads! But the pain is still brutal. Has your boss given you alternatives for in work? Mines has told me not to sit in the kids seats at all. Avoid floor etc. I’ve got an adult sized seat in the room to try help also! X

Chiropractor, stretches (like figure 4 with front knee elevated on yoga block/towel, etc), lots of walking, and I find cold packs works much better than heating pads
