A manifesto for change
2.3x
Black women in the UK are 2.3 times more likely to die during pregnancy, labour, or shortly after childbirth than white women.
For too long, Black women in the UK have been ignored and endangered by the very system set up to care for and protect them.
Wes Streeting, MP and Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, has admitted that our NHS has “a problem with racism”, and labour and delivery wards are no exception. But despite the abundance of evidence, Black maternal trauma remains a subject that is too often silenced by both the British press and the UK medical system.
Collectively, we’ve made noise. We’ve conducted research, we’ve shared our stories, we’ve written, starred in, and directed short films.
Now it’s time to demand change.
Today, we are sharing an open letter to The Rt. Hon. Wes Streeting demanding urgent action.
Our ask to you, our incredible community, is that you follow our directions below and email your MP, calling on them to support this campaign in Parliament.
They are our representatives, and they should represent our concerns, including our very real concern for the systemic racism, bias, and neglect which continue to put Black mothers and babies at risk.
