working out and a family?

Hi everyone! My husband and I have been TTC for over a year. We just finished our first cycle on Clomid and it was unsuccessful. My acupuncturist has told me that I shouldn’t do triathlons (I did my first last year and loved it) while TTC because it’s too much on my body. I’d like to train for another triathlon but I feel like if I do, I am choosing the triathlon over trying for a baby. Does anyone else feel guilty about this?

Hi Karla, the information about exercising while TTC is so mixed and confusing sometimes. It might have been coincidence in my case, but I got pregnant in the month I had scaled down my long cycle rides in my luteal phase. Have you thought about training in sync with your cycle? There's lots of info online, but basically would mean that you scale back intensity in the week or so around when implantation could happen. Might be worth a try? Good luck with TTC and enjoy your training!

I’ve looked into cycle syncing but it doesn’t mesh with triathlons. I definitely could scale back in the luteal phase, and I’d have to because I get so tired even when I’m not working out. Thank you for your thoughts

Hi Karla, I'm a bit late to this, but I also do triathlons and have continued training as normal. I conceived my first pregnancy (sadly ended in a missed miscarriage at 10 weeks) in the month that I had a cycling holiday and averaged 120km a day, and was training for a half Ironman. From my understanding, it probably depends what distance you are going for and if your body is used to exercise. I wouldn't sign up to an ironman while TTC, but training for a sprint or Olympic distance would be fine? A calorie deficit and inadequate rest is what throws my cycle, so while TTC I've been trying to make sure my nutrition is good and that I'm getting plenty of sleep. That being said, it's obviously really personal to your situation! Good luck, and I hope you manage to keep your love!
