Any other mommies planning to teach their baby their native language ? I plan to teach my baby Spanish but ya girl is struggling over here 😭
I was born in the Dominican Republic so Spanish is my first language but I moved to the US when I was in 1st grade so English has become my predominant language ( I can speak both English and Spanish fluent but let's be real my Spanish is more Spanglish than anything). Dad is Puerto Rican but US born and doesn't speak Spanish so now I'm tasked with teach the 3 of us.
Has anyone successfully raised a bilingual baby or is trying to? What helps? What doesn't?
Send all the advice and links my way 🙏🏼

Learn more about our guidelines.Heyy more, im domi too💕 and my daughter is almost 18 months and I’ve been speaking to her in English and Spanish since I was pregnant. Im open to learn more myself but as I now I try to be repetitive and translate. Si le digo algo en español , le repito en inglés y al reves. She’s only said si so far but she seem to understand me as well as she does in English as well
I'm due in December. Having a baby boy. And yes!! Absolutely been talking about teaching him both Spanish and English.
I read forever ago that's it's good to have one person speaking to baby in one language and the other person speaking to baby in English.
I have already been telling my dad that he can only speak to baby in Spanish so he hears it and picks up on it.
So I am doing only Spanish since birth and she is 3 and we are now introducing English slowly when she enters Pre-K she will be enrolling in a bilingual Pre-K its not what other do but for us it's more important that she be able to communicate with her grandparents that is why we took the route we did. For educational tv learning we did Pocoyo español , Larry vocabulario en español helped a lot when he repeated a lot , Disney+ has the option to put shows or movies in Spanish so that helps and Spanish books too simple ones.
Yesss same here! Dominican… we watch everything is Spanish except for miss Rachel. But everything else I change the language. I also speak to her in Spanish and hubby speaks to her in English but of course since it’s 2 different cultures we aren’t perfect at all. But it is very important to me as well. I can’t be one of those moms that raise a “no sabo” kid not happening 🤣🤣🤣
@Morena I told my bf that he should speak to her English and I'll do only Spanish but omg esta vaina esta mataril , I stay getting stuck 😭 I bought the mastery of love in Spanish so me pongo ahí a leerlo when I'm feeding her, smh have hella trouble reading in Spanish lmao
@Karen yes! This is what we're trying to do but I'm struggling out here because I tend to speak English all the time so I always catch myself talking in English and have to readjust. I saw someone saying as well that immersing them in the language as much as possible is just as helpful so I'm trying to switch the languages on shows to Spanish but not only them offer the option
@Gloria thank you for these recs! I've been trying to find some Spanish learning channels! I've also got some books in Spanish to read to her but need to get more, any you recommend?
@Emily Lmao i feel so bad cause that thought has def haunted me at night 😭😭 I need to find more Spanish shows for her , diache I wish I had access to old Spanish TV shows like Laura en America and caso cerrado
Quiquiriqui amanece en la granja, learning friends 100words book both Spanish and English settings , my very first bilingual book color-colores by Eric carle are some of the ones we have that are her favorite
Oh and Cleo y cuquin is her favorite at the moment you can find it on Netflix
@Gloria thank you!
Por lo menos la familia mía habla español but come to think of it I have to remind my
Sister to speak in Spanish as much as she can cause we both tend to lean towards English
Yes, is very hard when English is predominant, my husband used to know very little Spanish but I didn't speak English when we met so he has to learn more Spanish 😅 but I know your struggle, my husband's family the older speak Spanish but the younger only speak English so all the little kids are used to speak English and is hard for them to communicate, just try to only speak in Spanish with your kid, tv, o lo que el o ella vea que sea solo en español y veras que si aprende 🥰
I’m not a native Spanish speaker, but I speak fluently from living in various Latin American countries and teaching bilingually. My heritage language is Tagalog, but my Filipino family speaks English. I am an English as a New Language teacher, so I’ve studied language acquisition. I’d say the #1 thing is exposure. Find bilingual books, speak in Spanish, play Spanish music and TV shows, and surround your baby with opportunities to listen and engage in Spanish conversation when they’re old enough. Some helpful books are The Bilingual Edge by Kendall King and Dual Language Development and Disorders 2nd Ed.
