Desperate for some advice - formula neocate

So my baby boy is 6 weeks, we have gone through most formulas out there, as he started fussing and straining to pass gas and stools, even after he has passed gas or pooed the straining starts again all day and night, until he is red in the face and cries. He has had loose to constipated stools, our health visitor said she thinks it’s an allergy or a milk proline intolerance, our doctor put us on nutramigen lgg, which has traces of milk protein in…. two days in and he has had the same issues and mucus in his poo, he is constantly in discomfort and no one is getting any sleep. the doctor has now prescribed us Neocate formula, is anyone on this formula I’ve seen online that the side effects are brittle bones and fractures in infant so it’s freaking me out a bit, I feel like I’m just pumping him with so many different formulas I feel so guilty 😵‍💫🥹

My son is on formula for milk intolerance, it’s sma, can’t they prescribe that one?

@Leanne I’m not too sure, did your son have similar problems how is he finding the sma formula?

@Jade he was the same as the way you described your son. As soon as he had this sma, his a different baby, so happy and no trouble with pooing

Thank you! I’ve just got the Neocate going to try that and then if not I’ll definitely try the sma xx

@Jade Don’t feel guilty, we are on our 6th formula now with our 7 week old- which is Neocate. Apparently it takes a couple of weeks for baby’s system to adjust to it. My son also had constipation issues, colic, acid reflux etc so we were prescribed 2.5ml Lactulose everyday which we mix into his milk to help him poo. It has helped him and he is a lot better than he was and it was really bad. Speak to your GP about the Lactulose and also you may be able to try Gripe water for his gas because he is 1 month old. To add, Neocate is pretty thin so if your baby likes to guzzle his milk you may need to ask your GP about a thickener called Carabel to add to the feed. I hope this has been helpful but as always speak to your GP/Midwife and I hope you and baby finds some relief.

Ah I have every sympathy we were exactly the same with our son. It was horrendous seeing him struggle so much. Like others have said, it does take a little while to see a proper difference. It took around 2 weeks for us to see a decent improvement, and we did use carobel to thicken the formula (we didn't thicken it as much as the box says! Just half a scoop in each bottle was enough for us). Ruben also needed lactulose, and you feel awful for giving your child so many different things when they're so tiny but whatever keeps them fed and settles their tummy is whats best for them! So try not to feel any guilt your doing your best 💗 also I worried about our sons bones and development, he's been on oat milk since 10 months old and we're gradually following the diary ladder. He has multivitamin drops in his oat milk every day and he's absolutely fine, a little tough nut! Hope everything settles for your baby asap x

Try kendamilive heard it’s really good

Kendamil

@Azka Kendamill is cows milk and we have tried that

@Olivia thank you so much for your message it’s so hard but I just hope this helps him xx

@Jenaé thank you so much I’ve got some lac tulips for myself for after birth so maybe I’ll try it with my son, thank you so much xx

Just make sure the one prescribed for you is OK for you baby, as they usually have different amounts of active ingredient x

I could have written your post. Both my girls were exactly the same and I was combi feeding. We tried reflux formulas, comfort formulas but nothing worked. I cut dairy out of my diet and LO’s were prescribed Aptimal pepti 1. It took some time for my first to adjust but took to it well. My second went off the bottle completely so now I just use it when making her meals. We tried neocate with my first and she couldn’t keep it down. She would gag at the smell! Perhaps stick it out a bit longer but know that there are other formula options out there. It really does get easier with time x

@Meghan thank you 🙏 I’ve said we need to try this formula for at least 2-4 weeks and see but it’s so hard seeing them like this and they can’t tell you what’s wrong, but it’s comforting knowing I’m not the only one x
