Second pregnancy

I had an emergency cerclage at 20 weeks with first pregnancy. My baby was born prematurely at 30 weeks when I spontaneously went into labor. We are starting to think about having another baby and I just want to know what people’s experiences with this have been. How early were you given a preventative cerclage (if at all)? Were you given progesterone suppositories? How long did you carry the pregnancy? How careful did you feel you have to be with activity restrictions with a preventative cerclage? Thanks in advance! I want to be as mentally prepared as possible for this time around since it was very difficult emotionally last time.

I only ever had losses but I was given my preventative at 12 weeks and progesterone prescribed about a month before that. I’m 24 weeks tomorrow and in the past never made it past 16 weeks without Cerclage.

A lil snippet of my journey..(it might be a little lengthy)..had 3 miscarriages 2 in the second trimester in 2021..17wks and 21wks..and 1 in 2022 at 5wks..second pregnancy they figured i had IC..cervix was shortening and by 16wks I was rushed to get an emergency cerclage placed.. I went back to work a few days later & working in NYC you travel mostly by bus or train..at 20 wks anatomy scan tech noticed my cervix was opened and was rushed to L&D to remove cerclage .. gave birth to baby boy 21wks... fast forward to 2022..found out I was pregnant for the 4th time & decided to advocate for myself.. told the Dr I wanted my cerclage in as early as possible which was at 14wks.. told my boss I was going to work from home.. had weekly cervix check and noticed my cervical length was decreasing so at 20wks told the Dr to write my a prescription for progesterone which I've been taking nightly since.. im now 36 weeks and is going to get my cerclage removed this Thursday..I think advocating for yourself is the best thing🥰

@Kalisa Alexander wow, that is quite a journey. Thank you for sharing your story!!

@Dominique best of luck for this pregnancy💗

I had a loss August 2021 at 22 weeks with my baby girl. I decided once I healed emotionally to try again and I was pregnant again in 6 months. I researched alot and there are so many wonderful stories about woman with cerclage and their weekly journey on YouTube. I literally had no issues with my cerclage after getting it at 14 weeks. Only thing that sucked was I couldn’t have sex until removed at 36 weeks. I had the McDonald cerclage which was a simple cerclage and I didn’t need suppositories. I made it to 39 weeks and 3 days. Even after the cerclage removal at 36 weeks he still baked for 3 more weeks. Also get you a belly band I hated having vaginal pressure. Also the cerclage surgery wasn’t bad once I was numb they were done in 20 minutes 😘

@Shakeya this is helpful- I’ll definitely be checking the YouTube videos! How often did you have checks to know that you didn’t need progesterone? I’ve wondered if I would need that since they didn’t give it to me the first time.

I had checks every 2 weeks until I was 28 weeks. After that it was smooth sailing. The doctor said after 28 weeks babies have a good chance at living if you go into labor. So they don’t do it too much more unless absolutely necessary. They also don’t want to aggravate the cerclage. I believe at that time they will see if you need to use progesterone as well. But they will make those judgement calls based on your check up’s.
