Toddler won't say mama!

My almost 20 month old can say mama. He says it all the time to mean "I want that." He knows that I'm mama (if we ask who is mama, he points to me, and if I say something like "Can you give mama the ball?" he does). But if we ask him to say mama while pointing at me, he says "nanana" (which is his "no.") In general he's behind on speaking (has great receptive language skills), so I'm already a bit sensitive about his speech, but this really bugs me. Advice or commiseration welcome!

Does he make the m sound at all? Maybe sounds like he’s actively not saying it. The other day someone was in my sons face trying to get him to say momma, which he often does say, but he would not! For whatever reason this lady was reeeeaally pressing him too, but he refused and never did say it to her. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My 20 month old won’t say “mama” either! He is a talker and does say other words (his first word was dinosaur!) but he refuses to call me mama! Like you, he does know I am mama but doesn’t call me mama!

I wonder if you ask him to say your name if he'll do that. If you SO or others use your name around. your kid, maybe he thinks it's weird to call you mama... like thinks that it's a work someone uses to mean "oneself" or "me".

That’s a good point! Thanks Chrissy! I will try that out

My son started saying mama and Dada before he turned 1, but kinda stopped for a little then started again then stopped again. It's weird. We're in Jersey so fortunately we have some resources we were directed towards- Early Intervention. they come and watch your child look for anything Early signs of falling behind, find help they might need. check on your child's development and will suggest if you need to see someone or if your child is fine, give advice in certain situations. Jersey isn't great with a lot of things but I've heard amazing things about this program so far. On my birthday (which has always been a cursed day to me) the doctor brought up autism. I was very upset but now I think we all have our quirks my son is smart but stubborn. I know he'll be fine no matter what. I talk to my son like he's smarter than me. He probably is. I think that he can't figure out how to share what he wants and that frustrates him. Just keep working with them. Don't get discouraged.

Our 20 month old will say quite a few words but for the love she will not say daddy or dada. She looks right at him and calls him mommy and he gets so frustrated. I’ve heard her say it, but she just refuses. Our 3 year old says daddy all of the time so she knows. It’s seriously frustrating.

Mine 20m old won't say it either, at least not consistently. He calls daddy all the time but will only say mama when I'm not around

@Christine let us know how it goes! currently my kid points me to and says mommy and gets mad when i point to her and duane he name. I ask her who she is and she points to herself and says ME! language is weird

We love Ms. Rachel Songs for Littles on YouTube she does amazing lessons to teach speech use and sign!

@Ashley yes, I second this! We love Ms Rachel as well. A month ago my girl was saying maybe 5 words and now she’s saying words and signing because of Ms Rachel.

@Shara so awesome!

Mine is the same! It’s the funniest thing because he speaks. He actually speaks all the time, words here and there. He has resistance to saying mama for some reason. Now we have like a joke where we sing mooooo- mmy, mmmmooo-mmy … but It’s not him calling me that it’s just him signing 😅
