Paying for helmet

Heyy! So my son has a flat head at the back and I’ve just been sent over the quote for the helmet! Oh my lord they are expensive. I know they aren’t on the nhs but is there any funding or anything you can get towards the cost? My son needs one but there’s no way I can afford £3000 or £500 a month!

His 9 months

I’m from australia and paid $4,500 for my sons helmet. It was bloody expensive but it was so so SO worth it. He had a severely flat spot.

@Alexandra did you get any help towards it? They’ve said I can do payment plan but it’s still £500 a month which is a lot. My rent alone is 850 x

I didn’t get any financial help no - it’s not a huge thing in australia unfortunately :(

I don’t have any advice re the financial side but if it’s of any comfort to you at all my son also had a really flat head when he was young, flat at the back which made his head really wide. He’s 3 now and it’s no longer flat and a ‘normal’ shape, I didn’t use a helmet or a pillow or anything just as he got older he didn’t spend so much time on his back and it just sorted itself out x

You could try a “go fund me” of some kind

I have heard great things about the Perfect Noggin, a helmet alternative The Noggin Doctor's Plagiocephaly & Torticollis Parent Discussion Board

@Leanne heyy do you mind if I message you xx

@Lucy of course not x

My sister just had to pay 3k out of pocket for my nephews. :(

I am a health visitor and really these are often not needed unless there is a medical reason for the flat patch. Flat heads are known as plagiocephaly and as the bones in the skull are so soft as they fuse together they can flatten if too much pressure on them. Usually they resolve as they get older as they sit up more and there is less pressure on both the outside and inside of the skull as the brain is then pushing downwards more. Has he ever been diagnosed with Torticolis or anything else?

@Louise hiya. No they’ve never diagnosed with him anything. They just said because he favours his back that’s why the back has gone flat. His got a perfectly round head from the front and it’s very symmetrical it’s just flat at the back. It’s started to round slightly now his rolling on his side in his sleep but he still has nights where he will sleep on his back all night. I try and contact nap but sometimes it’s just not doable with things needing to be done. His sitting all day when his awake so there’s no pressure on his head. It’s just when his asleep. His never liked rolling on his side up until a few weeks ago xx

There are a few charities that can help with funding in the UK. https://www.headstart4babies.org/ is one that might be able to help might be worth a look!

@Lucy if everything else is perfectly normal and nothing is causing it that is underlying then I really would let be too concerned. I have visited thousands of babies and hundreds with plagiocephaly. Many who pay for these helmets don’t see any difference either. I have seen babies with them who have a diagnosed issue and where the plagiocephaly has affected their face shape so they may be given one.
