Fetal echocardiogram after IVF

So my gynecologist told me since we got pregnant through IVF we are going to have to do the fetal cardiogram test to make sure everything is okay with the baby’s heart. Did anyone else do this? Is this even really necessary? Seems just like a ploy to extract even more money..

I am 16 weeks and haven't been told about any of that. I just have my anatomy scan in a few weeks but that is it. I know when my mom was pregnant they found a heart issue with my sister at 20 weeks during her anatomy scan so I don't believe there is anything separate for it.

It sounded sketchy to me, thank you for sharing that with me I’m 25 weeks and she just happened to mention it during my last visit with her a few weeks ago

Yes, I did this at 20 weeks I believe. The fetal echocardiogram was ordered by the maternal fetal specialist. He recommended it because I did IVF and due to my age.

I did IVF and did have to have a fetal echo but only because they saw something on my anatomy scan.

Our baby is IVF and we also had an echocardiogram. I had it at 20 weeks and it also served as my anatomy scan. I was told it was purely a precaution because IVF babies have a VERY slightly raised risk of a hear defect. I look at the extra appointments as more bonding time with baby.

So what’s it like having an echocardiogram? Is it like another ultrasound?

Yes, it’s a much longer ultrasound. Maybe about 45 minutes? I also had to have a full bladder for it 🙃

I did this with my son. My OB mentioned it from the get go though. I was also a little skeptical but after everything we went through to get to that point I wanted to do it just incase. It was actually kind of interesting to see done. It’s similar to an ultrasound but more lengthy like your anatomy scan and it’s only of the heart. They look at the valves, chambers, and confirm blood flow in and out of the heart. When they’re done the tech went to the doctor and then the doctor comes back in to give you the confirmed results. Depending how baby is cooperating they might not get all the images they want but due to the length of it they’re able to go back and get what they need. Also, it was done at 28 weeks so there were a couple things at my anatomy scan they weren’t able to get a good look at so they did that at my echo since baby was in a different position.

Wow thanks ladies!
