X-Ray with no lead apron!

I had to go and have an X-Ray yesterday turns out I’ve fractured my wrist falling over BUT. Despite the midwives, GP and the DR in the hospital all saying to me make sure you tell the radiologist that you’re pregnant so they give you the protective apron the radiologist wouldn’t give it to me. She said no they don’t know what they’re talking about it’s my field. The aprons can actually cause scattered radiation and because it’s a straight beam on to your wrist not your stomach there is no risk to baby! After when I went back to the DR she was shocked and said well that’s not what we get taught. I’m so worried now 😭 I’m 26+4 has anyone else had an X-ray at all while pregnant did they use the apron?

I had a ct scan on my head 2 nights ago from banging my head after passing out, and nothing was used to protect my stomach. Hope your wrist is OK x

@Jessica phew! I was panicking so much. Everyone has always made such a fuss over it I almost didn’t let her do the X-ray lol glad I did though my wrist was so painful

@Abbie this is reassuring, maybe the drs just haven’t been updated then, who knows. My wrist feels a lot better with the splint thank you 😊

I had a dentist appointment a couple weeks ago and he refused to do a mouth X-ray because I was 26 weeks pregnant.

I went to the hospital back in may for an xray to see how I was recovering from my knee surgery in January and the surgeon refused to do an xray on me because I was pregnant x

@Jay I'm a radiographer and no we don't use led aprons. The evidence has shown that they do more harm than good by trapping the scattered radiation. Don't worry at all. In my trust we don't even check pregnancy status for anything that isn't between your nipples to knees as no radiation will be getting anywhere near your baby. Plus the dose for a wrist x-ray is so tiny you would get more on a flight to Spain. A lot of Gp's have inaccurate information and do not have updated radiation training so I would trust what the radiographer told you at the hospital.

Also when people are pregnant to be of the safe side we don't do any x-rays unless necessary so if it isn't urgent we just wait until baby has arrived.

@Niamh second this as a radiographer no leads used regardless of area xrayed ☺

I had my ankle x-rayed at 17w, no apron as it was targeted and not near my belly. He told me that it’s safest in the second trimester too!

@Niamh thank you so much for commenting I was really hoping someone like you would come on and comment, I feel so much better. I feel bad for questioning the lady who was the radiographer but I was literally told 5 mins before to make sure I tell her I’m pregnant and need the apron! Thanks so much for confirming this ❤️

I had a chest X-ray last Sunday for an infection and when I asked about an apron she said it’s not recommended as can actually trap the rays and do more harm!

@ jay don't worry about questioning them. We expect questions from pregnant woman and are happy to answers them. Unfortunately some drs have outdated information when it comes to radiation safety and can unnecessarily worry patients.

@Niamh thank you 😊
