Looking for encouragement

In January, I saw my PCP and found out I had subclinical hypothyroidism and I’ve been on levothyroxine since March. My most recent TSH is 4.550 (which is juuuuust over) so my doctor increased my dose from 50 mcg to 75 mcg. I told her we want to try for another baby but I’m getting discouraged since all this thyroid business is making it even harder to get to a healthier weight for pregnancy, and I’m just afraid of having complications. Has anyone gone through this before?

I would say 75 is quite a low dose especially with a TSH that high. Ideally you want it way below 2, 1 even. What do your other labs look like? Can I also add, not to discourage you from losing weight, but plenty of women have happy and healthy pregnancies while being overweight. Especially if we are talking about BMI. I think it is great that you want to lose excess weight, but I would argue it is more important to get your thyroid optimal. Do you know if you have thyroid antibodies?

@Kirsty she only ordered a TSH check since my last one was 3 months ago, but last time my TSH was 3.94. Re: weight, I had hypertension in my third trimester and a really messy induction/labor/delivery/recovery and I only gained about 25 lb for that pregnancy. Since having my baby, I’m still 20 lb heavier than pre-pregnancy and I’m really not caught up in the numbers on the scale, it’s that I can literally feel the extra weight that I’m carrying now and I want to be stronger before my body adjusts to growing another baby.

If you get your thyroid optimal, then I would almost guarantee you will find it easier to lose weight. If you have antibodies, then many people with thyroid disease find gluten/dairy free diets are very helpful. There at 5/6 thyroid factors that should be considered when looking at your thyroid health. So many health factors link in with your thyroid, for instance my anemia and low blood pressure is thyroid related, so understanding my thyroid health has been a big help in understanding my overall health. I hope you find some answers, there are a few great groups on Facebook which offer a lot of support for people like us! Make sure you have a look!

I got my PCP to add orders for thyroid antibodies at my next boodwork so fingers crossed!
