What works best for reflux?

My little one (8 weeks) has always suffered with trapped wind which we used infacol for then due to constipation changed to gripe water which seemed to help. Last week he started to drink a lot less, he would spit the bottle out during feeds and cry, arch his back, has hiccups and coughs, he would bring up a little milk sometimes but not much and not with every bottle…all the typical reflux symptoms of silent reflux. I took him to the doctors who prescribed infant gaviscon but the doctor didn’t seem too concerned but I explained I am because his milk intake has really dropped and of course I don’t want him in pain trying to feed or to lose weight. They said to try the infant gaviscon then if that doesn’t work we may need to look at omeprazole. The infant gaviscon seemed to help for a few days or so and he went back up to normal feeds but again last night and today he is back to the same not drinking as much, unsettled during and after feeds and same reflux symptoms but bringing up more milk than he previously would have. I’ve contacted the doctors again so am waiting to hear back but I’ve read that omeprazole really isn’t good for babies??? Is anti reflux milk any good? He’s been on cow and gate since birth but we’ve not tried any anti reflux milk as of yet. Any advice or shared experiences appreciated.

We are struggling with this exact problem, the gaviscon helped for a few days and then just stopped working like it was. Our dr was the same. Didn’t seem bothered at all. They told us to just feed little and often but our little one was struggling with this as she was used to 3 hours between feeds but having a bigger feed when being fed x

Have you tried a combination of infacol and gaviscon? You may need to up the dosage of gaviscon as baby gets bigger, (2 sachets) works a dream for my baby girl.

@Kerry I don’t think so. They checked for that at birth x

@Kirsty didn’t know they could have infacol and gaviscon at the same time. Doctor said we couldn’t give him both gripe water and gaviscon. That’s a good point about sachets. The doctor told me 1 and a half sachets but on the printed sticker it said one dual so I’ve just been giving him one sachet per feed but I’ll try 1 and a half and see if that makes a difference. He was last weighed by the HV on 7th September and was 10lb 12 which is just over 4.5kg x

@Courtney it’s really hard isn’t it. My anxiety is through the roof worrying he’s gonna lose weight and seeing him so unsettled and distressed around feeds x

My LG is on omeprazole at the minute and it’s been grand. In what why is it supposed to be bad for them?

My little one was on gaviscon for weeks, it seemed to help but made her constipated and then she started doing the same as your baby, screaming during feeds and refusing them, eating less and less. I asked my HV out, she recommended we try omeprozole for two weeks, GP agreed. We are a week and a half in and it seems to be working grand. What have you heard is bad about it? I also use a baby probiotic to support her gut bacteria at this time.

We have been really struggling with reflux, he is on gaviscon but it's not really helping much and making him constipated but they are reluctant to prescribe the omeprazole as they said its a strong medication which they don't like prescribing to young babies, but I am a loss with what else to do to help him!

I found helpful paced feeding and optibac. They will grow out of it especially after they will be on solids xx

SMA anti reflux has been amazing for us

Our 11 weeks old BG is with bad reflux, we did try anti reflux formula, gaviscon-stops to work after 10 days, from today on Omeprazole really praying for better days and solutions. She is very unsettle and you can see her being in discomfort is heartbreaking 💔

Have you tried changing bottles? My little one was exactly the same on mam bottles. She’s now on gaviscon with hipp organic formula and tommee tippee bottles, it’s been two weeks and I have seen such a change in her. And she still has infacol! I don’t put gaviscon in every bottle though due to constipation xxxx

In the early days my baby suffered terribly with reflux. We didn't think baby gaviscon agreed with her and made her constipated so we changed her formula after advice from HV. We used reflux aptamil at first but even that didn't agree with her. We now use hipp organic reflux and she enjoys her feeds and barely struggled at all. She even winds herself sometimes.

Having the same issues. My baby was put on carobel, it upset his stomach, I am now giving him gaviscon and about 2 weeks in and have found it seems to just make him constipated and he’s still getting reflux, sometimes worse than before he had it. I think I might need to try something new!

I see lots of other people also moved to hipp organic formula, we did too and it helped, it’s gentler on their systems I think!

@Nicole I was told by heath visitor they can have both infacol and gaviscon, and it really works for me, my girl is 9lb 12 and was advised she can have 2 sachets of gaviscon in a couple of weeks as her weight increased. Fingers crossed you find a solution x
