My 2.9 yr old son not talking yet

So my son knows his basic words but doesn't say sentences yet. He says at least 40 words and a few short phrases like "close the door" and "not this". He sign language "more" "all done" "please" and some animals and knows how to say water, eggs, the door, juice, car, food, chichi, and ofc mom, dad, bye, hi, please, no and probably a few other words. I understand his little language when he tells me he's hungry, tired, put on his shoes, when he wants to play he tells me how and brings up stories and how he fell and what not. He gets angry now when we don't understand his gibberish (his language) but as a mom I get him most of the time. When I tell him "can you say ____?" he says no. Like he CHOOSES to not repeat. He's smart in everything else and understands us but just chooses not to speak correctly. My husband doesn't want to get professional help because he thinks we can probably do it ourselves for free but I tell him I try as a SAHM and still nothing. My son loves to play with other kids but it's coming to a point where the kids don't understand him so they ignore him and it kills me inside because I see his excitement. What have you guys done for your kids to talk?

My friend had this same exact thing happened and took her daughter to speech therapy nothing wrong with professional help esp if you notice it t

My daughter is the same age and is pretty much the same I think but I haven’t noticed much of a difference in other kids her age. Most of them don’t say much either. I did get some toddler flash cards off Amazon and we have been drilling her every day. I am amazed at how much she knows that she just wasn’t saying. Tonight she said “zipper” and “oval”. Every night it’s a new word it seems. Maybe they could help your son too? :)

my daughter is the same way.. she says many single words, and few phrases.. shes in early intervention speech and outpatient..

There’s a lot of resources that can definitely help him with insurance so it’s not out of pocket 🤍 In CT there’s a program called birth to three, maybe they have something similar in your state! Hope this helps

Early intervention is extremely important and helpful in the first three years. Tell your husband to look at it this way: you could invest a little bit of time, money and energy now to help your son succeed, get some guidance for how you can help him and take some of the pressure off of your whole family. Or you risk can waiting until he struggles in school or with peer interaction later on and then have to spend significantly longer and more money trying to do the work that would’ve been 10x easier when he was young and his brain was still rapidly developing. You’re his momma, listen to your gut and fight for it girlie.

Thank you all! 💞 Yes I'll speak to my husband about it and hopefully we can get it resolved. Forgot to mention we speak two languages at home. My husband doesn't speak Spanish much but I do to my son because of my side of the family. Maybe that has something to do. My son seems to understand both languages

My niece was the same if not spoke less, they gave her speech therapy for a year and now she won’t stop talking. It really helped a lot.

Also note every child is different and learns at their own pace and it’s very good you are seeing signs of him saying words. He can put a 3 word sentence together that is very good. Have you tried putting ms Rachel for him on YouTube ? She’s very good with speech lessons

@Kassandra yes I have but he chooses not to repeat. He does the sounds of animals or mimics some parts and dances but not fully repeat what she is saying.

We took my son who is almost 3 to speech therapy and he never talked to them. He would come home and use sign for drink eat or more or all done. We quit speech therapy. Now he counts to 20. Still not full sentences. Says buzz woody shoes socks, sings songs but messes uo the words with his gibberish. They'll talk when they are ready. They are just playing games with us right now lol
