Time out during school

My son is in reception. My father died in Jan this year in the UK. My family are planning a memorial in Jamaica for his 1 year anniversary next Jan. My son is in reception and I'm wondering if I should request 3 weeks off from school so that we can go. I am worried that the school won't agree. What should I do?

Ofcccc they will agree! And sending love and prayers to you and your family. I’m sorry x

They probably won’t agree and will issue the fine. We took our daughter out for a week to go to Florida and accepted we probably will get a fine.

Is he 4 or 5, if he’s 4 I’m sure they can’t do anything about it x

The school will very likely not agree, but statutory school age is the term after they turn 5. You can’t be fined before then. If your son is 4 in January still, you don’t need to ask permission. You just tell the school he won’t be in for 3 weeks. (In my professional experience working in primary schools, where the local authority and attendance officers have not pursued fines for non-statutory age children)

Even though legally children under 5 do not need to be in education, as he’s in school you can potentially still be fined regardless if it’s reception or he’s 4 if the school haven’t given permission. Unfortunately they definitely won’t agree to 3 weeks. The headteacher will tell you how many days they can give you so just be warned that you may be hit with a fine.

Thank you all. How much is the fine btw?

Think it’s £60 per parent. Not sure how it works with three weeks.

£60 per parent and rises to £120 if not paid within 21 days

£60 per parent, per week. I'd imagine they'd authorise some time off but not 3 weeks.
