Baby reflux

Hi. I’m looking to just gather some info form those who’s babies have reflux. My LO of is 5months has reflux since he was 2 weeks old. He’s been on infant Gaviscon since then due to a choking incident in his sleep. Since then no spit ups in his sleep 🙏🏻 but he’s always still had some spit ups. But hey some is normal with babies. Anyways so he’s on 6oz of formula per feed and will sometimes take it all or take only 3.5-4oz … so I felt it’s maybe time to up the teat size from a 1 to a 2 🤦🏻‍♀️ such regret. His spitting up is so much worse. Today after one feed for example he brought up milk 5 times. I do every thing right I pace feed him, I even try stop to burp him ( which he hates and screams ) I feed him more up right, I keep him up right 30 min after feeds etc etc you name it I do it. So Iv gone back to the number 1 teat cause awful a week in the number 2 it’s gotten so bad. I feel awful for him to drink his bottle with a small teat. He gets so tired. I’m ringing the GP tomorrow for advice ( not that I have much faith in the GP because really why don’t really know what all the formulas and reflux - just my opinion 🫶🏻) My question is : those whose babies have reflux what was your experience? Did you end up switching formula to lactose free maybe / diary free or just use milk thickeners ? I just wanna see what people did cause I really can’t have him drink his bottle with a new born infant number 1 teat 😣

Could he have tongue tie? Oral function issues can contribute to reflux. My LB had tongue tie and he has a high palette both of which contributed to feeding issues nothing to do with his milk… you could also try switching teats to a different brand. The lansinoh teats fit on mam bottles x

We had infant Gaviscon for a while but it caused other issues such as constipation, so our GP prescribed omaprezole and from there no issues. You just need to crush it, add water and syringe it for baby but im sure the GP or pharmacist will explain if you try it. I hope you get something sorted!

@Megan different test is a good shout as well actually. Good to know they fit in mam bottles cause those are what I have. No tongue tie with him. 🙏🏻

@Hayley thanks 🙏🏻 we have tried him on that when he was in hospital and he literally vomited every time he had it 😟 luckily he doesn’t have the constipation with the Gaviscon and he takes the max a day. I hope the GP had some kinda suggestion. I’d speak with my HV but they are absolutely useless with getting in touch with and getting sn appointment. I’m thinking if GP isn’t helpful I might pay to speak to a paediatrician .

@Janine yeah they fit perfectly luckily! Just in case you didn’t know tho the flow rate on them is really weird so the slow flow teat is actually faster than the medium flow so probably best to start him with medium first then move on to the slow .. if it doesn’t help you could try an infant feeding specialist we had to go private but she was really helpful x

@Megan oh how strange. Yeah I might contact one actually. I was dealing with an infant feeding team at the children’s hospital but I suppose a feeding specialist is possibly different. I know they say when he starts solids things should get better but I feel awful for him to be sicking up like this. I could have cried today because I thought I was doing right by giving giving him the next size up a few days ago and it was so bad. He and LO were covered in sick up all day and I even got weed on twice to go along with it. Felt very defeated. He’s such a easy child but yesterday and today have tested me 🤦🏻‍♀️

My little girls had reflux possibly from about 7/8 weeks old. It’s been so long 😩 she was prescribed carobel which helped her not to be sick however didn’t really agree with her as she was still screaming in pain. Then was prescribed gaviscon, didn’t help at all and gave her constipation. Doctors had basically said there was nothing they could do. So I tried her with a comfort milk that was thicker than normal formula and for the past 2 months she’s been so much better and a lot happier. She is on cow & gate comfort and is on size 2 teat. I do definitely think if she was on normal formula then she would choke with a size 1 teat. However since the formula she is on now is thicker she’s able to have size 2 xx

Might be worth trying different formula we were using regular actimel formula and pediatrician after little one had similar choking incident in sleep suggested trying regular cow and gate instead apparently she had found it worked with her son, I was a bit sceptical at the time since both made by same company and i thought they were all meant to be same but had tried everything else could think of and within a week it was like having a different child, her reflux all but disappeared, even when she does get it occasionally now it doesn't seem to bother her like it used too. Might be worth a try

My baby had the most horrific reflux since 3 weeks and we switched to dairy free and it’s tons better. Before this we had tried literally everything from Gaviscon to every single recommendation there is out there. It’s also worth knowing that reflux peaks at 4-6months which our babies are at. My baby is better but sadly it’s still there but I can tell it doesn’t hurt him anymore so it’s more bearable and it’s less frequent. We’ve also started weaning which is helping (hopefully you can start soon as your LO approaches readiness) Don’t let the GPs fob you off just keep pushing for a solution x

@Janine We went through a similar experience with having the reflux. He had a tongue tie repair and things have improved. He is predominately breast fed but we give gaviscon with his expressed milk with size 2 lansinoh teats and size 3 with anti reflux formula which we only trialled at night to see if it helps. He doesn’t struggle with neither of the teats. The infant feeding team was a big help for us, hopefully you have one in your area.
