Are full bladders necessary for third trimester scans?!

I suspect the NHS letter is just a template for any maternity scan, I know when the baby is tiny it helps them to be able to see it, but is it needed once you are third trimester? It is a 30 min drive for my appointment and last time there was a significant wait so I don’t want to be more uncomfortable than needed! Thanks mumas

No baby is big enough 🙂

Phew, thank you ☺️

I had a growth scan at 28 weeks and was advised I don’t need a full bladder

I went to the toilet right before my second trimester scan and then they told me to go again midway through because they could see my bladder was full 😛

It depends what the scan is for, for growth scans it's fine to have an empty bladder. Mine was also to check the placenta postion/cervix and she said I'd need a full bladder. I'd peed right before so she gave me some water in the scan and said if that didn't work we'd have to try internal. Fortunately all was fine with the abdomen scanning!x

no x

You don’t need a full bladder after 26 weeks. Baby is big enough

@Isabelle oh that is good to know as it is for placenta position! Hope yours had moved up x

@Sarah but don't worry too much as they managed it even with my practically empty bladder! they just tipped the table back so I was basically lying diagonal with my legs elevated 😂 and it has thank you! 5.7cm away from the cervix so they've said no need for further checks, hope you have the same x

@Isabelle pleased to hear that, mine has moved up too 3cm away which is far enough away for a vaginal birth so happy days! X
