Hitting themselves

When my baby is overtired or really frustrated he hits himself or pulls on his face. It breaks my heart. We've just got back from abroad and he's overtired and won't go to bed without getting really upset. He was hitting himself and I just broke down crying. Is this a sign of something serious or just a frustrated toddler that can't express himself yet?

If it was something serious you'd usually see other signs. If you flew he may have sore ears, but you'd typically have other signs again too. It's a very normal part of their devlopment sadly lovely and as awful as it feels they can't typically seriously injure themselves with their own force at this age. Redirect and comfort where you can, but not reacting and reinforcing the we don't need to hit ourselves memo and it'll come typically as communication develops like you say! Xx

Most probably is frustration and not being able to communicate. He is overwhelmed with his own feelings and doesnt know how to react. And I am with you, i would also cry is desperation and not being able to help him. Its just a phase. Try and talk to the GP or health viitor for reassurance and most probably they can give advice on how to soothe him best. ❤️❤️❤️

@Rhiannon @Lucy I really appreciate you both replying. In all other aspects there are no other signs. He's a happy and sociable little fella. Thank you for the reassurance 🩷🩷
