Referal to GD team following growth scan

Following my scan yesterday the radiographer said baby’s abdomen is just below the 97th percentile and they usually refer to GD for 97th, so she did anyway. She was a bit ambiguous as she said nothing else points to GD so “I shouldn’t worry” 🙄. Anyone got referred to the GD team following a growth scan? Did they call you for an appointment? I was told that if I was advised to do the test it will be home monitoring for a week

I've been treated as having GD since 26 weeks due to repeat ++ in all urine tests and previous macrosomic baby. I did a fasting test for 1 week which I passed but then failed to complete the GTT because I have Hyperemesis and was super sick so failed. Fundal height measurements have always been normal but a growth scan showed the baby is 100 percentile for belly measurement and following 97th for overall growth. She was around 6lbs 7oz at 34 weeks which they were concerned about. I've been monitoring my blood sugars at home since then and waiting for the GD team to ring me. The machine is very temperamental though so I haven't been able to consistently take all readings, but so far they've been ok - on the high side occasionally but not high enough to say I have GD. Urine samples still showing+ glucose though. So I'm so confused. I don't even eat a lot either. Mostly just a small breakfast and dinner. Got another growth scan in 1 week. Stressful 😫

@Amanda Im so sorry you are going through this! Has the GD team not been in touch to help you through this at all? From what I read it’s less to do with what you eat and more to do with hormones, so don’t kick yourself that you are doing anything wrong!

I saw the GD team a week ago but they didn't really do anything. They said they'd ring me today to confirm all my home monitoring results and go from there but because I haven't been able to consistently get 4 results each day I don't know if they'll tell me to continue monitoring. I'm 36 weeks this weekend so all seems a bit too late 😅

I had this during my last pregnancy for the exact same reason and I didn’t have GD and baby came out fine.

@Natisha thanks for this! Did they make you test for a week at home?

Yes I had to test at home. I already had the kit because I did it this way first time around, so I actually started testing straight after scan when they mentioned it before they called to tell me to do it and then they said I was fine (might have been under a week I tested for because I had no high readings in the time I tested)

I had the same - got booked in for a GD test after baby’s abdomen was big on the growth scan. They called me to book in the test, it ended up being the day after the scan. I didn’t have to test at home, I did the test where you drink the glucose and then wait for 2 hours before blood tests.

I got refered to do a Gd test after my 32 weeks growth scan they didn’t mention her abdomen being large just her being on the 90th centile and weight 4lb 11 at 32 weeks on the scan but I think everything else was ok, but I have recently had ketones ++ in my urine 3 days ago not sure if that’s possibly related could be when u Google it does mention gd I’m still waiting I’m 34 weeks Monday ill be 34 weeks 3 days when I do the test I had to wait 2 weeks for it.. which seems ridiculous My midwife booked mine after I saw her the day after the growth scan ( the people who scanned me asked if I had a gd test but it was the midwife what did the booking) Waiting 2 weeks tho has made me extremely anxious as I just want to know if I have it.. I tried changing my diet already (tried) but I think I was doing it all wrong and was accidently starving myself I think that’s why I had ketones in my urine! ( never had this in my urine this whole time)

Can anyone share meal tips/recipes to help with this ?

So this happened to us on Monday 🙄 I’ve already had the glucose test a month and a half ago which came back normal. Two weeks ago baby was 72 centile. Now suddenly he’s 93 centile and they started panicking and sent me home with a prick glucose testing kit which I’ve had to do for the last 5 days 4x a day. I’m not happy 🤣 Readings bar one (because I had squash in the night) are all normal (they said any readings that are over x3 they say you have it) In all honestly, I would take it with a pinch of salt. I have had 3x friends who were all told they had 99 centile babies who would come out being 10-12lbs and that they MUST be booked in for early inductions and c sections - guess who were all born under 7lbs and were totally fine? 🙃 my best friend is a midwife and she says these growth scans are notorious for being wrong, you could have extra fluid etc. Do the home testing if you get offered it for peace of mind - you need to finish your last meal by 7.30pm with 12hr fasting

@Marni that’s what I was afraid of, being put on high risk, not being allowed to birth at the MLU and pool and being pushed for induction/c section. I too did the glucose test a month and a half ago and it was negative and have researched that these tests aren’t really accurate after weeks anyway. So because nothing else points to GD I refused the home test with the GD team. I am however testing anyway myself at home for a peace of mind and all results so far have been below the 5.3 for fasting and 7.8 1hr after meals. The radiographer doing the scan had already started mentioning how big the baby is 🙄

@Incognito it honestly starts to get a bit ridiculous after a while and the scare mongering doesn’t help either. With the home testing kit you are monitoring yourself are you fasting for 12 hrs and stopping eating after 7.30 pm? The hospital told me to do that but the midwife said eat normally. It’s all extremely confusing!! I also did the glucose test about a month and a half ago and passed it. I don’t know why they continue to push it on people even after they have passed

@Marni it is absolutely ridiculous, and I’m not sure what to expect at my next midwife appointment because I refused the referral to the GD team. I cannot believe that everything has been going so well and the last month of pregnancy they seem to be starting with this scare mongering. Most days I stopped eating before 7:30 but a few days I haven’t, not a significant difference in glucose levels in the morning though, so taking that as a positive. But I see what you mean, their advice is inconsistent and almost trying to find a problem when there isn’t one. Since then I have done a lot of research on GD and risks to birth and baby and most risk can be mitigated by a physiological birth and allowing skin to skin after etc. So I’m not worried about it tbh, just worried about how the MLU will handle this
