Early scans

I’ve just found out that I’m pregnant again (not even 4 weeks until tomorrow). My first pregnancy ended in a MMC in February, we found out at the 12 week scan. I’m looking at private scans but I’m wondering if they’re worth it as our first stopped growing at 8w6 days and we would book a scan for around then/maybe before. Are they helpful at all or do they just cause more anxiety? If you’ve had one what week do you recommend going for one?

Hi Chloe. Hope you’re ok. Congrats on your baby, I’m actually in the same position. I mc in Feb and I’m 5 weeks today. I’m tempted by an early scan too but I have my doubts. If you think an early scan will help, I say go for it. I think I will for for one because even though we don’t know what will happen, early resistance will help. x

I had an early scan at 4 weeks and if I’m completely honest I wish I’d have waited as it was hard to find at such an early gestation and not much to see at all just a ball of cells barely visible,I couldn’t wait for my 12 week scan after that as I wasn’t reassured at all. If I was you I’d wait until 12 weeks as at that point the pregnancy it’s self is more viable and more to see too. I have had a miscarriage before this pregnancy and I’m now 36 weeks I hope this gives you hope 💓

If you go through IVF they don’t scan until I think 7 or 8 weeks as I think that’s the best time to check heart beats. I’d say try to hang on until then - which I know is easy to say but going too early could create more anxiety as they won’t be able to tell you much. Keeping everything 🤞 for you x

I had a mmc in my first pregnancy in 2022, found at 12w also (had seen the baby at 6-7w at a private scan) which is why I chose to have two early scan the second time round. I then conceived in August 2022, I chose to have private scans at 7w, 10w and 13w (private NIPT test done). And I have to say they helped me massively. I would recommend waiting until 7w at the earliest, as I did have one done at suspected 6w, but I was to early and only saw the gestation sac and yolk sac (actually 5w), when I went again two weeks later baby was measuring 7w. It really helped me, and as time passed and I got into the second trimester most of my anxiety went. If I ever have a second I will also go for early reassurance at around 7-9w and then possibly again two weeks later. I now have a very healthy one year old! Congratulations on your pregnancy, big hugs!

I had a mmc at 8w last May, I'd booked a private scan at 8w 4d and they found no heartbeat but measured 8w 😔 I booked one because before having my little girl previously I'd had a normal mc. Nhs told me I can now have an early scan because of the miscarriages so maybe get in touch with EPU.. I had severe pain with my little girl around 6 weeks and went to hospital and therefore they gave me a scan

Congratulations on the new pregnancy✨ I’m so sorry for your loss. I had a mmc at 12 week scan in November baby stopped growing at 11+4 I’m currently 10+1 with this baby. We didn’t have an early scan with the last baby as I had no issues during 1st trimester. We decided to have one this time to help with anxiety we had one at 9+4 baby was wriggling around and they said everything looked completely healthy I am more hopeful this time as baby was planned and I’ve been on right meds whilst trying and during 1st trimester, last baby I wasn’t as it wasn’t a planned pregnancy. I still have anxiety as we lost last baby so late into 1st trimester but I thought it was a good time as you see quite a bit including heart beat and it’s a few weeks until 12 weeks definitely given me reassurance and I loved that weve seen this baby wriggling around happily it’s a nice memory we’ll keep if we do have the worst outcome again but hopeful all will go well this time xx

I had my first scan at 7 weeks due to previous miscarriage the month before. we listened to the heartbeat and was very reassured. I am now 15 weeks with our rainbow boy 💙

Thank you all🩷 I might try to see how long I can hold off but will probably end up booking one for after 8 weeks but before the 12 week nhs scan. It’s just so nerve wracking, having a previous miscarriage really just brings so much anxiety😬

I paid alot of money for private scans but later found out that you can just call the early pregnancy unit and book a scan and just say u had a lot of pain or saw spotting and are concerned and they can scan you under the NHS for free

@Zahra I wouldn’t advise making up symptoms to EPU just to get a free reassurance scan off course if you have bleeding or concerns call them. The nhs is very stretched and I would hate to be the person that gets a scan when the person who is bleeding called after and misses out on a scan for that day x

Hey. I would contact your EPU and request a reassurance scan due to previous miscarriage xxx

@Tanya absolutely! I was bleeding and had to wait 5 days to be seen and told I miscarried due to lack of appointments. Plus I would hate to put that out in the atmosphere I’m fear it would become true. X

@Tanya I didn’t mean to make up lies about symptoms. I meant that that I didnt know about EPU when I was pregnant and kept going and paying for private scans whenever I felt unwell

I'm on the fence on this myself. I had a missed miscarriage and found out at a private scan, I was 8 weeks and baby was measuring 8 +1 but no heartbeat. Because they were measuring ahead, they said the heart probably stopped that day or maybe the day before. I had been planning to have the scan a few days earlier and if I had, I would have thought everything was OK for another month until 12 week scan. Makes me quite hesitant to have a reassurance scan next time. Saying that though, I found it to be a really positive experience with my first (successful) pregnancy. Sorry, I realise that's not very helpful 🤦‍♂️

Instead of a scan perhaps you can ask for a progesterone test to make sure your levels are up. That’s really the only thing that you can have done control over. 🩷🩷
