When I went to Canada my daughter was 7 months as well, I had a front body baby carrier. The second time she was 11 months and we had a stroller and were able to carry it all the way to the plane ar no fee Any baby food they will let you keep, even water bottles as long as you mention its for baby you’ll be fine
I flew AC tho
With most airlines you get two free checked "baby" items and a free carryon (diaper bag) with a lap infant. So your stroller and car seat would be the two free checked items (you can gate check both, just one, or neither). If you want the car seat on the plane then you would have to pay for a seat for the baby on the plane. You can bring any baby food, milk ect. Through security, although they may check it with a special sensor to make sure it actually is baby food and/or milk. They don't open it or spoil it when they do the check The uppa baby vista is a fine size, no concern that way. I would recommend getting a car seat bag to put the car seat in if you check it. It allows you to wear it as a backpack or carry it like a stroller. You can also sneak a few extra items in the bag. We put all of our liquids in the car seat bag when we went to costa rica because we didn't do any checked items aside from the free baby ones.
Please please please if you must check your car seat do so in either it's original box or a box of similar size. Your car seat will get thrown around and damaged just like luggage. If it is in a box you'll be able to see the damage and judge if it is still safe for use. Checking your car seat does give it an unknown history which makes it unsafe for use. Best thing to do is to have baby in their own seat on the plane but bucket seats do not always fit nicely on planes so a convertible seat like the Cosco Scenera next would be a good option. This seat also fits nicely in the basket of the uppababy vista! I have the vista V2 and it's great but we did purchase a travel stroller for flights because I was worried about my vista getting treated like luggage and broken.
Here to second everything above about checking a car seat! If baby has a seat bring car seat on plane. If they don’t consider buying an affordable one at your destination. It sucks and in the end it’s your personal choice but having a car seat leave your sight is a scary thought in my mind considering most manufactures have a ‘replace car seat after any collision, no matter how minor’ even a fender bender. And I’ve seen how luggage is thrown around.
I flew alone with my son when he was almost 4 months old for a 14 hr long international flight and also did a EU trip when he was 8 months old. I have an Uppababy Vista too and the mesa car seat. The international flights allowed me only 1 free item apart from his suitcase+diaper bag. So I had to choose btwn the stroller or carseat and I decided to take a stroller. But I read so many reviews of airlines throwing the strollers and vistas getting broken, esp the frame & I was not ready to take a risk with mine. So I purchased a travel stroller that is cabin approved and that was the best decision I did! I never had to gatecheck my travel stroller as it fit the overhead bin in the flight and I had the peace of mind that it wasnt being thrown away and getting damaged. You can always rent out a carseat at ur destination if its a short trip. Thats what we did in Europe, or check marketplace for a gently used one. And all of his snacks and food went thru security no problem too!
Also pls carry lots of toys or books to keep them engaged. Traveling with a 4 month old was definitely less stressful for me than the 8th month version lol. But he wasnt crawling or walking yet so he was in my lap the whole time and I had lots of toys and books for him that he was kept busy. We are flying again next month and he'll be 14 months by then and I know Im in for a ride for that trip😁
I just flew via westjet with my 22m old. He had his own seat so I used the car seat on the plane. Last year we flew when he was 8 months, he was a lap infant for it so we Checked his car seat. If you paid for their own seat, then use your car seat on the plane. It's safer for them, as well as it gives your arms a break. The car seat has to be FAA approved and westjet may insist on seeing it before you board. I used an umbrella stroller in the airport both times and gate checked it.
We've done quite a few flights now! I Gate check a travel stroller and it works so smoothly. Westjet staff are great if you need an extra hand too. No issues with food or formula. You will have to take them out at security and they will swab the outside of the bottle. I always bring a blanket and try and get baby to nap. And I always give tylenol before the flight in case of sore ears. And soother!
I flew with my 7 month old last year. At the time, we used a car seat/stroller combo and we took both to the gate with us. It was way easier to have the stroller in the airport with us. Recently, we travelled with our baby (18 months) and I used westjet free check in items (2 free items for kids). I checked his playpen and car seat. I took the stroller to the gate with me. I also had a suitcase (paid to check that). I had my purse and his diaper bag and no issues with that. I didn’t have any issues with food or milk (breastmilk and formula). Before you go through security, tell them you have baby food and milk. It won’t be an issue.
I flew WJ in January with my 3 month old and I gate checked both his stroller and infant car seat. I got travel bags for both of them so they didn’t get all dirty en route. I used a baby carrier to wear him onto the plane so my hands would be free.
I fly with my 6 month old next week. We are checking her car seat and she will be on my lap and gate checking her stroller. There should be info on WestJets site regarding what you can bring. We are flying flair and we can bring any food/formula/water for formula/breastmilk we need for the trip we also get her diaper bag as an extra bag. It’s going to be a 4.5 hour flight (Waterloo - Abbotsford) I can come back and update once we get there!
