Traumatic birth cause reflux?

My LB is 7 weeks old and has GERD, the doctor prescribed gaviscon, which as like a lot of you did nothing but constipate him. The health visitor came and suggested colief but after researching, it doesn't seem that colief is for reflux but for colic. Has anyone found colief to work? Also, after doing research on reflux, I've seen that reflux can be caused by misalignment of skull, neck and spine which may occur from traumatic birth and benefit from physio / chiropractic work. My LB had a very traumatic birth with significant trauma to his head (picture attached of outcome) so think this may be contributing to its cause. My question is, has anyone else gone down this route and is it possible to do this through GP or is it private practice only, and second, did it make any positive impact?

Aww precious boy 🥹 I’m sorry you have such an awful experience. We did too. Regular cranial osteopath treatment with someone who specialises in paediatric care will really help. Have you had him checked for tongue ties too? Babies who had a traumatic delivery often suffer with ongoing tension in their little bodies and it takes a while to work it out of them with the above. We did have to go private though as GPs just want to prescribe Gaviscon or Omeprazole x

@Harriet thankyou for your reply, it is really helpful. Yes, he had tongue tie and had it snipped a couple of weeks back which seems to improve his latch for 2 days but then he just seems to struggle with feeds still. This may sound like a silly question but how do you go about going private and finding a specialist? Was it a case of googling? I feel a bit lost

I'm so sorry you and your little one went through this! He is gorgeous though. We saw a chiropractor/osteopath. It didn't help with his reflux but it did help with some other symptoms. I always think with these things it's worth trying and even if it doesn't work you can at least know that and not be wondering "what if". We went private but I imagine you'd be able to get referred via your GP, especially given it may well be a result of the birth trauma.

@Stephanie exactly what happened to our son too, have you been doing the tongue exercises? Often babies are left with lots of tension under their tongue (just like muscle tension) and you have to keep exercising and stretching it so he can move the tongue freely and help with the latch. I’ve just seen your based in the North but if you’re able to get to London, The Tongue Tie centre is absolutely amazing. Carmelle is so helpful and helped changed things for our baby. A consultation is about £200 but the difference after was 🤯. There’s also Rockabye Hub which is Wales/England border near Liverpool. She might be able to help too. They are all on Instagram so you can have a look. Or maybe even message them and see if they can recommend a specialist near you? Paediatric Cranial Osteopath might take some googling, but they can do amazing things for tension as well. Does he cry alot? My son’s tension caused acid reflux 😢 it’s been a nightmare so I can really sympathise with you x

@Rebecca thankyou! 🥰 completely agree! Everything is worth a try so going to give it a go and if it helps in other ways, I guess it isn't a loss

@Harriet thanks again! I've searched those recommendations and followed for advice and using the terminology you said I've found a paediatric cranial osteopath not too far from me and have booked him in for a consultation. Yes, he is very much a crying / frowny baby and it just makes me feel sad for him like he's not known a life without pain yet and really want to get it sorted and alleviate the pain for him. I'd done some research in tongue exercises but not been as consistent with it because it's rare that he's awake and in a content mood to do them effectively but will make them more of a priority when possible xx

I had the same issues with my little boy. He’s now 11 weeks old. I took him to an osteopath and it was worth every penny. Mine was £50 a session and I had 3. I found he’d actually settle off me and not automatically roll to one side he was just so settled. For his reflux we ended up getting ‘carobel’ prescribed. It’s a thickener and it’s worked wonders. I was changing him up to 8/9 times a day due to projectile reflux. Now it’s honestly like magic and he’s not often sick. I hope you find something that works. It’s tough! Xx

@Tasha @Harriet @Rebecca thank you all for your advice! I took him to a paediatric cranial osteopath today and he noted he had significant tension in his neck in one side and treated it. It seemed to make a difference but said he was using Chi or Qi? On him, now I am open minded but I didn't think that just holding him and passing on energy would make much difference. Is this a common technique of osteopaths that I saw used? I left feeling very confused lol

@Stephanie I totally get what you mean! It doesn’t really look like they are doing alot does it? Just holding different pressure points etc, but it really does work so well. Keep an eye on your little boy’s symptoms and if you feel after 1 or 2 treatments, things are improving, stick with him, or try someone else. It took me a while to find the right Osteo for my son. Hope you’re doing ok

@Stephanie I've not heard of an osteopath using that before. It's all about the minute adjustments to the bones with osteopathy. The Chi or Qi sounds more like Reiki or something? I'm not sure!
