Is your baby saying words WITH MEANING yet? My son is not

He is very advanced in gross and fine motor skills. He walks independently, climbs our bed on his own flawlessly, and descends on his own, but sometimes he needs our help. But in terms of speech, if he is not behind, then he is just meeting the bare minimum. Babbles but not a lot, imitates but also not a lot (even less frequent than babbling), just overall I wish it was better. What about your babies?

My son is also better with gross motor skills and also great at doing puzzles. He can say a few words but often pronounces them wrong, like just saying ba for ball, or inconsistent. However, there is a girl in his daycare class who is 10 months old and she can say long multiple syllable words like bye-bye, doggie, dragon, friendly and uses them appropriately… but isn’t very mobile compared to the other babies her class. She isn’t close to walking and still struggles to stand up. There’s also a boy in his class that is closer to walking but has more issues with his emotional regulation and is not very coordinated. It’s interesting how different everyone is and to see how they grow up and build on their strengths long term that make up their future personalities.

Every baby is different. They should be saying at least 3 words by 1. Is your baby around other kids? I find that it helps when a baby is around other kids (my youngest has an older sibling and she can say 40 words and sometimes says 3 word sentences). If you’re worried then please talk to your child’s pediatrician and see what they have to say!

My little girl says, mama, dada, ball and dog regularly with meaning. There is a great page on instagram that helps with speech. Speechsisters I believe is what they’re called. Lots of great idea to use to encourage speech. And also what counts as a word. My girl says Ba for ball and it counts because she is using it regularly and in regards to the same thing.

Well all the replies have me even more worried now 😕 ofc I'll bring it up with his doctor but this looks like almost all kids are doing better.

@Indigo It’s actually 0-3 words by 1. If baby is saying nothing that’s not cause for alarm at 12m old. I’m just correcting you incase there are fearful moms reading your comment

@Amanda I’ve never been told zero and I’ve always heard 1-3 words by 12 months. Good to know though, thanks

My son can say mama, dada, and uh oh. It’s 0-3 words by 1. Most babies say 1-2, but 0 words is not cause for concern at 12m. If your baby isn’t saying words yet it’s ok. When you bring it up to your ped you will feel better!

Hey sis!!! Forget about all of the people above, your baby has been focusing all of their energy on motor skills and is thriving!! I would read to them and talk to the 24/7 but i wouldn’t worry. My baby is similar to yours, walking and feeding themselves and doing infinite fine and gross motor things but doesn’t say a word. Babbles dadadads and mamama but doesn’t apply any meaning to it. Only looks when i call his name like half the time, doesn’t clap, only waves sometimes, doesn’t point. I’m not worried at all! It will come! Try not to panic until much much later! It’s okay to be aware of it incase they need resources like speech therapy and stuff but don’t worry!

12,5 months - no words yet. And I am not worried about it. Kids in bilingual families can start talking very late. If your bany isn't saying words, it is okay. If the lo buble, try different sounds. Try to mimic your sounds. It is all part of the speech development process

12 months and no words with meaning. Understands a lot and has great motor skills. Just think if you didn’t have social media. Chances are you wouldn’t be worried at all! Let your baby do what your baby needs to do.

@Indigo you shouldn’t say every baby is different and then say that they should be saying at least 3 words by 1. Because that’s not true.

@Johanna May I’m saying every baby goes at their own pace. There’s babies that can talk 2-3 word sentences at this age and then there’s babies who can only say 1 word or none at this age. I was always told that by 12 months of age they should be saying 1-3 words🤷🏻‍♀️ she asked what our babies were doing so I told her what my child does and what I was told by her pediatrician.

@Indigo thank you for clarifying! Because that’s not what you said. You initially said at least 3 words by 1. With no qualifiers. But now that you say that it makes more sense.

Thank you. I am very worried if he's communicating enough.
