My son crawled ‘the right way’ around the same time he walked. Up to that point he was army crawling I think it’s called or something similar to that.
Crawling has been removed as a milestone because there are lots of different intermediate ways kids move before walking, including scooting! 18 months is when they're expected to walk, so lots of time left! Do you see him trying to pull up and cruise?
As an adult that scooted as a baby and apparently never really crawled, I agree with everyone that this may just be his developmental timeline! On the other hand, there are studies that show that not crawling can have some neurological impact with motor movements later down the line. If you are feeling concerned, go to your pediatrician and ask for a referral to a specialist like an occupational therapist or pediatric physical therapist, etc. Get him evaluated and then you know how to move forward.
My friends baby is like this. They put her in PT and she finally crawled the right way around 18 months. Still not walking. I’d ask your ped and if they suggest PT then I’d do it
To preface, she was not reaching any of the normal gross motor. So not crawling by 11 months, not pulling to stand etc. so the ped suggested PT. I think because of the waitlist, they got her in around 13 months. And she is 18 months now and just started knee crawling.
My son started walking independently at 13 months & his crawling started out as symmetrical (one knee up, one knee down). We took him to the chiropractor because I learned that any variation of “normal” crawling is an indication of an imbalance and the child needing more support. Turned out he had some muscular tightness, likely from his position while growing. Not walking by 14months isn’t technically a delay, his crawling style does indicate that he needs some support and that could be why he isn’t as agile. A chiropractor visit could give you great info, support and insights to what your little one is dealing with. Best of luck!
It’s technically not delayed walking until they reach 18 months. My son is 13 months and hasn’t attempted to take independent steps. Just cruises along the couch or table. Also, not every baby will crawl the same way. Some are scooters and that’s perfectly normal
